What is “Neurostimulation” and Why is Ilia Topuria Using It?

Ilia Topuria

Reigning UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria is using neurostimulation before his upcoming bout. Topuria will take on current and two-time interim 155-pound titleholder champion Justin Gaethje on June 14 at the White House.

Earlier this week, via his YouTube channel, the Georgian-Spaniard informed fans that to maximise his performance before every bout, he uses neurostimulation.

Neurostimulation, which helps treat Parkinson’s disease and some long-term pain issues, works by sending electrical signals to certain nerves or parts of the brain to adjust unusual brain activity. In chronic pain management, these electrical signals can interrupt or alter the transmission of pain signals to the brain, helping reduce pain and improve quality of life.

Why is Ilia Topuria using neurostimulation?

Ilia Topuria is using neurostimulation with infrared lights. In the clip, he mentioned that it helps him in faster mental recovery, improves his sleep quality, and also his focus before training sessions. He said:

“This is neurostimulation with infrared light to improve focus for mental recovery, to improve sleep. What I notice most is the focus before training. It’s like not even 100 coffees match the effect of this. Like super focused. I’ve always used it in all my camps. It’s always worked very well for me. It’s true. It looks weird but is amazing. “

Topuria added that he has two devices. One is what he uses before training to improve his focus, while the other is after sessions to improve sleep quality and help him with faster recovery.

Before training, Topuria got a neuroactivation of the spinal nerve to ‘improve trapezius function and general function of everything related to the shoulders,’ so that while striking, he can keep his guard up the whole time without being tired or his hands aching.

Before fights, neurostimulation will also help “El Matador” increase muscle response and strength, as confirmed from the video.

After training, to increase neuro-muscular activity, the 29-year-old also underwent Percutaneous neuromodulation therapy as shown in his YouTube video, to remove pain and stiffness in the shoulder region, trapezius, and deltoid.

Lastly, “El Matador” added that neurostimulation technology has taken a huge weight off him, and he can feel the benefits in training, as his shoulders feel much lighter and freer. The two-division UFC champ emphasized how much mental recovery and emotional well-being are needed, as during a fight or even in camp, there are times when an athlete’s body gives up, but his mind helps them push through those difficult periods, which is why taking care of mental health should always be a top priority.
