Canelo Alvarez Calls Out Conor McGregor For Boxing Match
UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has done a great job of putting his name in everyone’s mouths. First the Irish star became hot property in mixed martial arts. After a successful UFC debut in 2013, ‘The Notorious’ put the entire 145-pound division on blast. Calling out Jose Aldo from his very first fight, McGregor vowed to dethrone the long-reigning Brazilian, but few believed him at that stage. Following five more fights, McGregor stood opposite ‘Scarface’ at UFC 194.
As McGregor had predicted, Aldo fell from the first clean strike. The only ever UFC champion to that point had been demolished in 13 seconds. The next sequence of events would keep the Irishman away from the featherweight division and yet to defend the belt to this day. Originally meant to face Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196, McGregor instead fought Nate Diaz. The Stockton bad boy rocked the boat in a big way, defeating the UFC’s biggest star by submission.

McGregor would remain at welterweight for the immediate rematch with Diaz, but not before a drawn out period of drama. After neglecting to attend the UFC 200 press conference, the Irish striker was dropped from the main event and fell in to a feud against the promotion. This in turn led to a somewhat theatrical beef with boxing great Floyd Mayweather.
Since he became the flavour of the month in the boxing world, ‘The notorious’ got in to it with the stars of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Once again proving his reach has no bounds, McGregor was making front page news with 10-word statements about pro wrestling. His saga in the boxing world is far from over though. After his UFC 202 victory over Diaz, former WBC middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez piped up.

McGregor had first mentioned Canelo when the Mexican boxer vacated the WBC title. Choosing to drop one pound to face Liam Smith instead of Gennady Golovkin, Canelo took some flack from McGregor for ‘cherry picking.’ The decision has indeed caused controversy among boxing fans, and after UFC 202 Alvarez blasted ‘The Notorious’ for having poor cardio.
Taking it one step further during a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, as quoted by MMAMania, Alvarez issued a straight challenge to McGregor:
“If he wants to try out boxing, then anytime he wants. If he wants to come over to this side of the world and try boxing, anytime he wants, to see that it’s not as easy as he thinks.”
