Alistair Overeem On UFC Future: Let’s Negotiate

Alistair Overeem finished Junior Dos Santos at UFC on FOX 17 in a heavyweight bout and also finished up his UFC contract. Yes, that is right. Overeem is technically a free agent and is expected to test the market.

“My focus has been on this big fight,” Overeem said at the post-event news conference after his win. “My entire focus was on it. When my entire focus is on training, I just do 100 percent that and nothing else. This is the new reality. I’m going to have to look at what’s going on, and I’m actually looking forward to it.”

When asked about a potential title shot, Overeem believes that he is in the mix for one, but he will have to talk with the UFC to see what happens.

“I do think a title shot is there. I’m very confident with the team and the people around me that we could pull that off. But let’s negotiate and see what happens.”

“I’ve been training 22 years and competing 19 years,” Overeem said. “I’ve had ups and downs in my career, and it’s something that comes with it. Never give up, always keep positive, always keep creative, assemble good people around you, and you’re going to do fine. That’s just something I live by that I hold on to. And now we’re here.”

Overeem made it clear that he is not done yet, which is pretty obvious, and plans to get into camp in January then see which promotion he signs with.

“But I’m not done yet. I’m going to keep going, so I’m already going to head back into camp in January and I’m going to be ready for what’s going to happen next.”

Overeem (40-14-1) is currently on a three-fight winning streak. In his last six bouts, he’s 4-2.

It’s unclear which promotions that he is interested in signing with, but he did work for Scott Coker while in Strikeforce, so that would make the most sense to join Bellator if he were to leave the UFC.
