Conor McGregor Makes History In New York, Becomes Two-Division Champion

It wasn’t even close.

History was made at UFC 205. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) held its first New York City event on Nov. 12, 2016. The pay-per-view featured three championship bouts and was capped off with Conor McGregor (21-3) going to-to-toe with Eddie Alvarez (28-5) for the lightweight title.

Alvarez was picked apart inside two rounds.

Right away, Alvarez landed an inside leg kick. McGregor threw a front kick to the body. “The Underground King” got dropped with a right hand, but he got up quickly. The champion whiffed an uppercut. Another straight right sent Alvarez to the canvas. “Notorious” rained down some punches and elbows. Alvarez got up on wobbly legs. Alvarez landed a punch to the body. The round ended and McGregor clearly took the opening frame.

About 30 seconds into the second stanza, a left hand popped “The Underground King.” McGregor stuffed a takedown and taunted the champion by putting his hands behind his back. Alvarez threw a wild hook and was countered. He dropped down for a takedown, but was thwarted. McGregor dropped Alvarez with a combination and the fight was stopped thanks to referee “Big” John McCarthy.
