Believe it or not, in the year 2015 a bout between Andrei Arlovski (25-10, 1 NC) and Frank Mir (18-10) had major implications in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC) heavyweight division. That contest took place at UFC 191 on Saturday night (Sept. 5, 2015) in Las Vegas.

Arlovski extended his winning streak to six, but it wasn’t easy.

The fight started and Arlovski landed a short right hand. Mir tied up the “The Pit Bull” and pressed him against the fence. They quickly separated and met at the center of the Octagon. Arlovski connected with a leg kick. Mir tied his opponent up again, but Arlovski slipped free. Every time Arlovski would look to tee off, Mir would clinch and get him against the fence briefly. Arlovski landed a knee to the body off the break. Round one ended with the two veterans standing toe-to-toe.

Mir checked a leg kick with under 15 seconds into round two. Mir took Arlovski down and postured up. Mir began landing some punches. Mir rapidly attacked the body of “The Pit Bull.” Arlovski held onto Mir’s body, hoping that referee “Big” John McCarthy would stand them up. He got his wish and the fight returned to the feet. Arlovski landed a switch kick to the body. The two heavyweights looked a bit lethargic. Mir went for a spinning backfist, but Arlovski blocked it. Arlovski popped Mir with a right hand. Round two ended with Arlovski in control in the clinch.

Arlovski’s right hand was thrwarted and the two engaged in yet another clinch at the beginning of round three. Mir was able to duck under a winging hook and engage in a clinch, but Arlovski reversed it and had his opponent’s back against the fence. McCarthy broke them up. Mir clipped Arlovski with a right hand and Arlovski was on the ground. “The Pit Bull” escaped a submission attempt and returned to the feet. Arlovski popped Mir with two left hands. Unsurprisingly, the two once again ended up in a clinch. The final horn sounded and the two former champions embraced.
