Robbie Lawler Is Excited To Show What He Is Capable Of Against Jake Ellenberger

Long-time MMA veteran and UFC welterweight Robbie Lawler has made a big splash since resigning with the UFC back in 2013; ‘Ruthless’ has beaten Josh Koscheck, Bobby Voelker and Rory MacDonald since his return, and lost to Johny Hendricks for the title in a great display at UFC 171.

It wasn’t long before Lawler was booked in to face Jake Ellenberger at UFC 173, and he stopped by with UFC Tonight to discuss ‘The Juggernaut’:

“He is a really powerful, crisp striker and a decent wrestler. (Jake) is very well rounded, so I need to be sharp that night and show what I’m capable of. I’m excited, I want to keep elevating my game, get back in the gym and show what I’m capable of.”

Lawler gets the chance to remain at the top of the division with a win against Ellenberger, and it would be hard to argue against ‘Ruthless’ getting the next title shot if he gets a knockout. Ellenberger will look to bounce back from his lacklustre loss against Rory MacD in mid-2013. The topic then turned to the fight with ‘Bigg Rigg’:

“He got a takedown late and was sitting on my legs, it was frustrating. He did what he needed to do to get the win, he’s a crafty individual, hats off to him. I wasn’t out there trying to win rounds, I wanted to finish him. I wasn’t worried about winning this round or that round, I just wanted to beat him up and finish him. Maybe I should have tried to win rounds.”

Many fans considered Lawler unfortunate to not go home with the belt that night, but he doesn’t seem too phased by the whole experience. If Lawler can truly build on that loss, then Jake Ellenberger may be in for one hell of a fight.
