Anderson Silva: I don't see anyone in Brazil that can beat Jon Jones

When looking at the UFC’s Light Heavyweight division at a macro level many have posited that, at this time, there are not any fighters out there that could beat the current Light Heavyweight Champion, Jon Jones.

One person that looked at the Light Heavyweight division at a more micro level was UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Silva, recently spoke to Portal TV about his feelings on how Brazilian fighters would fare against Jon Jones. "There's not much to say about Jon Jones. I don't see any Brazilian in conditions to face him, even more so because Brazilians don't tend to completely study what happens in there, there needs to be more studying done by the Brazilians in that division so that they can understand what really is going on in there. But it's hard for me to say this, because I'm Brazilian and I wish there was a Brazilian with the conditions to beat Jon Jones, but, this is a personal opinion of mine, I don't see anyone in Brazil that can beat him, at least not for now." – via BloodyElbow.com – translated by Tom Mendes.

If Silva has any sense he will not even consider going up to 205 to face Jones, it wouldn't be much of a fight.

thats what everyone says before the fight with Silva. Silva has a great chance at beating Jones and Even Lyoto has a great chance if he rematches. Jones is by far the biggest LHW and has a foot of reach on just about anyone so his abilities although great are more down to his advantages in size and length. Machida was showing him a good time even with the reach advantage jon had and it just shows that his standup is not that great because if machida was his size it would have been a train wreck for Jones.

Silva has the power, accuracy and patience to capitalize on a mistake in devastating fashion. Griffin, Vitor, Irvin. There is no one in MMA like him. He does not need to put three or four punches together. It is one mistake and it is over. I think that Jones would lose to Anderson, and following that loss, become one of the best Mixed Martial Artists that the sport has ever seen. He needs the loss.

I think a LHW Palhares could leg lock Jones. It might be the hate I have for Jones saying that though.

JDS would wreck Jones. No bias in that (albeit they are in different weight classes)

Jones is probably the best mixed martial artist I've ever seen.

Jones beats JDS now thats just crazy talk. JDS' TD defence is to strong for Jones to get it to the ground and his boxing is on a different level. Where Jones is wild and unpredictable JDS is crisp and accurate plus Jones wouldn't have the same physical advantages over JDS as he does oppenents in the lhw division. Give Jones a few more years of strength and conditioning to make a serious move to heavyweight then start talking JDS

Jones has the longest reach in MMA. His stand up which consists of kicking shins and knees, and staying out of reach is overrated. Hes good at keeping distance but his technique isnt great.

The biggest thing Jones has is his GnP. Thats lethal. Someone who can get inside his reach and be relentless in a smart way will beat him.

JDS has fast hands with a lot of power. And his TDD is phenomenal. Jones would get eaten alive if he cant take JDS down. Which is likely.

This is getting bookmarked for everybody once Jones wins the HW title (might be a couple years).

JDS has shown good takedown defense, but Jones has never had anybody stop him from taking them down.

The fact that Jones will probably have the size advantage by that point won't help JDS one bit.

I think you are tip riding Jones a bit much.

JDS would KO/TKO Jones, Jones wouldnt get outclassed most likely but it would end with JDS's hands raised, and Jones on the floor.

Hendo could possibly beat him, and maybe Gustafsson with his reach and all. Chael possibly if he moved up + I would like Jones to move up to HW and fight Kongo to see if he's worthy enough for the likes of JDS.

I agree that Hendo has a chance at winning BUT it is all in his right hand and his wrestling. Hendo is pretty slow compared to Jones and has a lot less length. I put the odds (guesstimating) at 55-60% in Jones' favor, maybe even higher.

Why is nationality such a big issue in MMA. A single fighter does not represent the majority of the country, only a very, very small part, him/herself. Plus majority of the best fighters in the world are fighting out of the states through their camps. You can put your spin on anything but at the end the fighters' accomplishments are his own not the countries, he/she should not be held as a savior or a failure to represent the country. Ultimately a country with a bigger resource will garden the majority of the champions. Clearly seen in the Olympics, U.S.A./Russia/China are the dominant, again particular sports that some countries specialize also become 'sponsored' through the government to raise an 'awareness' and encourage growth for gross revenue from the average folk. Canada=Hockey, U.S.A. = baseball/NFL/Basketball and pretty much all of the Olympic sport. A country has nothing to do with a particular individual that seems to excel at a sport. For god's sake, maybe Anderson would have been a bad ass curler if he emigrated to Canada. Oh, look, my bourbon is out! Truthfully i get caught up in Nationality sometimes, but then I take a step back and see how silly it is, nobody chooses their place or parents, it just is, you have only so much control. It's not going to matter if you are the greatest MMA fighter from Brazil/Russia/USA/Canada/Japan etc. at the end you will be like the rest of us, dead. Or hopefully if my will gets read a small dna sample will be launched into space (obviously for "aliens" to find) so i can be reserected millions of years to see the universe through Maulder's eyes. Oh my Bourbon is out again.

Brazil is a sh!thole in a lot of ways. Lots of corruption, crime and poverty. These guys know it and are defensive. Natural reaction is to wave thief flag around every chance they get. Kind a like a short guy trying to prove he's he's a tough guy. Problem is no matter how many fights he wins, he's still short. Aldo won the other night . . . Brazil's still a sh!thole.

Nationalism is pointless. And yes my brain acknowledges people that actually make up their own minds, and don't follow for no reason, nor support their country man out of pointless pride. You cannot be proud of something you have not accomplished. These athletes are always thanking God for some reason, not the fact that they trained so hard to accomplish something, they are undermining their own person.

Silva was talking about the 205 weight class not having a Brazilian being able to beat Jones. He certainly wasn't referring to himself or JDS.

I'm not quite sure why so many people are fixated on champions moving weight classes. If you're struggling, then maybe going up or down might help.

But if you're the best in the world at your weight, why not stick with what is working?

The reason a lot of people (myself included) are fixated on DOMINANT champions moving wt class is that MMA is both sport and true martial art. If someone has proven beyond any doubt (as AS has) that he is the greatest at his wt class then the only real challenge is beating the bigger guys. If you look at the truly legendary Martial Artists, they are known for doing things that should have been impossible. Mas O'Yama beat bulls bare handed. Fock Yuen Kap, having beaten every local challenger traveled to Russia and beat wrestlers who were twice his size to death. Miyamoto Musashi killed his first man in a sword fight when he was 13 and went on to win 60 duels before retiring undefeated to write The Book of Five Rings. The Masters of our time will not be known for many fatalities (hopefully) but if they are going to go down as true legends the least they can do is move up in wt class.

No. Chael took AS down and did nothing but massage him. AS subbed Chael. Not only that but Chael and Jones have totally different wrestling styles. Chael is a collegiate wrestler while Jones is a Greaco-Roman wrestler. The difference if you are not familiar is that Chael's style is based on shooting for takedowns while Jones' is more centered on take downs from the clinch. Jones wants no part of AS' clinch game.

I would say Jones main benefit is size, power, reach and wrestling while Andersons is accuracy, movement, BJJ, composure, experience, instinct, speed, skill and technique. My guess is Jon looks to stand and strike in R1 to show he can hang and ends up getting tagged and Anderson Jumps on it for a quick finish.

Of course Anderson has a great chance at beating Jones. Yes Jones height and reach give him advantages. But its not his fault he's tall, with great reach and makes weight at lhw. Give Jones another five years of development because I am certain that Jones at age 24 would destroy a 24yr old Silva.

overweigth redneck living on foodstamps just about to get your ass forclosed... no offence but you dont know crap about the USA

Rednecks seldom use foodstamps, they'll go kill something to eat, not look for handouts.

Many people are aware of the favelas and the enviroment there. Almost every country has some advanced areas or city sections that bring in the products.

Seldom will you see a US fighter who can tell you the same hard road story to get famous. I like seeing the stories of fighters who came from poverty and rose above. Aldo's story is common there.
