UFC Fight Night 83 Preliminary Results: Strickland Finishes Garcia

It was once again fight day here at LowKickMMA, and the talent on display tonight (Sunday, February 21st, 2016) will come in the form of UFC Fight Night 83. Headlining the card are Donald Cerrone and Alex Oliveira, but there’s a whole bunch of great fights also taking place on the preliminary section of the card.

Alex Garcia vs. Sean Strickland in a welterweight bout closed the preliminary card on Fox Sports 1 for UFC Fight Night 83. Both men came out on fire in the first round. Strickland tossed him down to the ground but ate an up kick by Garcia. Strickland eventually got into guard and then to half guard. Strickland landed some big shots from the top for the majority of the round and dominated Garcia. The second round both men slowed down, and the highlight of the round was when Garcia took him down late in the round. In the third round, Garcia took him down with a double leg and worked him over with strikes from guard. Strickland eventually got up. Strickland stunned him under a minute left in the round and then dropped him with a combo, and the fight was called.

Oluwale Bamgbose and Daniel Sarafian met in a middleweight bout at UFC Fight Night 83. This one did not last long. Bamgbose was doing a lot of fakes and footwork that set up a head kick that dropped Sarafian in the first round. He finished Sarafian with some strikes on the ground.

Leonardo Augusto Leleco and Anthony Smith met in a middleweight bout at UFC Fight Night 83. Smith looked comfortable and was really letting his hands go in this one. Smith landed a one-two punch that stunned Leleco in round one. Smith went for a single leg and got it. Smith ended up in guard on top for the majority of the second round. Leleco stunned Smith and Smith dropped in the third round. Leleco poured on the strikes. Smith tried to stand up, but Leleco stayed on him for the majority of the round and did some damage. The fight went the distance, and Smith was given the win by unanimous decision.

Nathan Coy and Jonavin Webb met in a  welterweight bout to open the Fox Sports 1 preliminary bouts for UFC Fight Night 83.  Coy was the more aggressive fighter and pushed the pace of the fight. Coy took him down with under two minutes to go in the second round and got his back. Coy would then move to mount and poured on the strikes to end the round. In the third round, Coy was almost caught in a guillotine choke, but powered out of it and pushed through the fight. Coy dominated the rest of the round to earn a unanimous decision victory.

Ashlee Evans-Smith and Marion Reneau met in a women’s bantamweight bout finished off the UFC Fight Pass preliminary card. Reneau controlled the majority of the fight with her strikes. In round one, Reneau dropped her with a straight right and went for a guillotine choke, but Smith was saved by the bell. Reneau continued to out striker until round three. Smith caught a leg kick and took her down. Smith landed some strikes, but then let her up, and the fans booed. The fight went all three rounds, and the judges awarded Smith the win by split decision.

Kelly Faszholz and Lauren Murphy met in a women’s bantamweight bout. These two girls went at it and the fans in attendance and on social media enjoyed it very much. Murphy busted Faszholz open (nose) in the second round and turned into a war after that point. Murphy started to let her hands go in this round as Faszholz was firing away all fight long. Murphy got to mount with under a minute to go in the third round and started to pour on the strikes to finish the fight.

Opening the UFC Fight Pass prelims was Shamil Abdurakhimov vs. Anthony Hamilton in a heavyweight bout. This was a stand-up fight that saw both men have their moments. Hamilton wanted to take the fight to the ground early, but after several failed attempts, he threw that game plan out the window and started to let his hands go, which paid off. Abdurakhimov used the clinch to fire away several strikes and short jabs to find success of the feet. They traded to the end. Abdurakhimov was awarded the unanimous decision.
