UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks had a long and bumpy road to his first ever title shot, and it didn’t go as planned. The controversial decision at UFC 167 left “Bigg Rigg” devastated, but Georges St-Pierre soon made the universe right again. “Rush” vacated his long-held title in a storm of controversy, but for Hendricks this was the start of a great year.
The UFC quickly booked Johny Hendricks vs Robbie Lawler at UFC 171, for the now vacant strap. “Ruthless” came in to the fight as a resurgent force from the old days, with a new found control that made him even scarier. He had just knocked out Josh Koscheck and Bobby Voelker, and dismantled Rory MacDonald over three rounds at UFC 167.
The fight at UFC 171 would usher in a new era of champion, but only after five thrilling rounds of action, and what has been labelled the greatest 170-pound title fight ever.
