JD Vance Opens Up on Justin Gaethje’s Fighting Future
U.S. Vice President JD Vance spoke to Justin Gaethje and his mother at the White House a couple of weeks ago and has now shared whether he believes the newly crowned undisputed UFC lightweight champion will retire or continue fighting.
Gaethje dismantled and dethroned Ilia Topuria on June 14 in the main event of UFC Freedom 250 to capture the undisputed lightweight championship. After winning the belt, the 37-year-old did not confirm whether he would defend it or retire, now that he has attained what he had always wished for.
When U.S. Vice President JD Vance asked “The Highlight” if he plans on fighting again, the newly minted 155-pound champ did not have a definitive answer to that question. However, Gaethje’s mother told Vance that it’s time for her son to hang up his gloves. During a recent sit-down with Joe Rogan, the US vice president said:
“I asked Justin, ‘Are you done fighting?’ and he kind of hesitated for a little bit. His mom was with him in the Oval Office, and she was like, ‘Yes.'”
Meanwhile, longtime UFC commentator Rogan opined that if the promotion offers Gaethje “life-changing money” for one final bout, he will be game to enter the octagon again.

What has Justin Gaethje said so far about retirement?
Justin Gaethje has made it clear he intends to compete again in 2027, as he already had 2 brutal fights this year. “The Highlight” wants to see how the next few high-profile matchups in the lightweight division play out, and based on that, he will decide whether to continue or vacate and retire.

Meanwhile, Gaethje’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, posted on X after UFC 329, hinting that for his next bout, Gaethje will lock horns with someone he has never fought before. Abdelaziz’s comments suggest that “The Highlight” will be defending his title against top contender Arman Tsarukyan.
