Quote: Ronda Rousey Not The Most Dominant Athlete

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey was recently bestowed the honor of ‘Most dominant athlete’ by world sports magazine ‘Sports Illustrated’. ‘Rowdy’ landed herself on the front cover of SI, yet again pioneering and bringing the spotlight to WMMA, and the sport as a whole.

The current 135-pound queen has undoubtedly contributed massively to the world of MMA, but still has her doubters. One of which, rather unsurprisingly, is Miesha Tate. Check out what she told MMAFighting.com about Rousey’s recent award:

“I don’t know if that’s an accurate statement, I think there are a lot of athletes in the world. Maybe someone who took a gold medal at the Olympics could be considered more ‘dominant’, you know?”

Rousey and Tate shared a duo of fights during their careers to this point, with the champ winning both by armbar submission. ‘Cupcake’ continued:

“In different sports it’s hard to compare because we have a fighting sport, versus someone who maybe does swimming or something,” said Tate. “An athlete is still an athlete so it’s hard to compare the apples and the oranges because they’re different things, so I don’t know if I agree entirely on that.”

There has been much debate about Rousey’s placement as number four on the pound-for-pound rankings list. The division which she owns is somewhat devoid of a queue of legitimate contenders, much similar to the problems faced by Demetrious Johnson.

In comparison to ‘Mighty Mouse’ though, Rousey is a superstar. Her feisty attitude and dominant performances inside the octagon have made her a worldwide sensation. From starring movie roles to mega-deals with Reebok, the WMMA boss has been there and done it.

With a clash with Bethe Correia on the horizon, do you think Rousey will cement her place as the most dominant athlete, or do you feel she is too highly ranked in the P4P listings?
