Paige VanZant Doesn’t Like To Be Compared To Ronda Rousey By The Media

Opening the main card of UFC 191 on Saturday night was Paige VanZant vs. Alex Chambers in a women’s strawweight bout. Domination doesn’t describe this fight for Paige VanZant. From striking to her wrestling, Paige VanZant continues to grow in her fights and as a fighter overall each and every time she steps inside the Octagon. Paige VanZant won this fight by third-round armbar.

“I don’t think a lot of girls in my division are used to having the pace pushed that way, and that’s definitely something I get from my teammates; they always push me every second. So that’s kind of the way I fight.”

As VanZant continues to grow as a fighter, media members and fans alike are constantly comparing both VanZant and UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey to each other.

“It’s as much a compliment for people to even say that”, said VanZant. But those are definitely huge shoes to fill and I have a long way before I can make that comparison. But I’m thankful that people see that, and I definitely want to follow in her footsteps. She’s opened some great doors for women in all athletics and especially the UFC. So I just think of it as a compliment. It’s not pressure added.”

Paige VanZant (6-1) is currently on a four-fight winning streak.

When asked about a potential title shot, VanZant was very quick to turn it down for now.

“When the title shot is there for me, I’ll definitely be ready for it. But I’m not going to rush anything. This is my time in the UFC, this is my career, and I want to enjoy every second of it. It’s just such a blessing to be a part of the UFC. Of course, I’m going to listen to the UFC, whatever they think the next step is for me, I’m going to listen to them.”

UFC 191 took place on Saturday, September 5, 2015, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event aired on pay-per-view, FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
