Johny Hendricks: I understand you have to put on a show for the fans

Johny Hendricks will step into the Octagon on Friday December 30 in what will be the biggest fight of his 11-1 career. Hendricks, who last fought at UFC 133, defeating Mike Pierce via split decision; will face Jon Fitch on the pay per view card of UFC 141.

The one thing that many fans seem to be concerned about in this bout is the potential for it to be a “boring” wrestling match.  That concern is based around the fact that both Fitch and Hendricks were accomplished amateur wrestlers before making the jump to MMA. Hendricks was a two-time NCAA champion and four-time All-American while wrestling for Oklahoma State University. For his part, Fitch captained the Perdue wrestling time, compiling a career record of 97-12.

While Hendricks can understand the fear that two elite wrestlers facing each other could result in a “boring” fight he does not thing they need to worry as he feels he employs a fan friendly fighting style in the Octagon, “Look…if you have two guys who are really good at wrestling and are able to compete against each other at a high level that is when it has the potential to be a boring fight. But each fighter is different. I personally don’t think I am a boring fighter, at least I hope not, but if I were to fight someone who is stylistically similar to me it could end up being boring. You do what you have to do in order to get your hand raised, but there has to be a little bit of both. What I mean is that although it’s all about getting your hand raised, I do understand that you have to put on a bit of a show for the fans.” – for more see MMASucka.com
