News is breaking that ex-UFC and Strikeforce heavyweight Lavar Johnson has been arrested on multiple felony accounts. His girlfriend accuses the MMA fighter of a harrowing assault in her home, that left her with blood streaming from her face. ‘Big’ Johnson hasn’t fought since a duo of submission losses to Blagoy Ivanov and Cheick Kongo under the Bellator banner in 2014. His record stands at 18-10 (16 KO, 2 Sub).
TMZ.com had the initial report:
Among the allegations, Johnson’s GF says he slammed her against the wall and ground, kneed her in the face and head multiple times and then struck her 11 more times in the face with a closed fist. Johnson’s GF says the fighter eventually backed off when he saw the blood streaming down her face.
When cops arrived, Johnson was gone — but the girlfriend was clearly busted up … with swelling across her forehead and nose and blood everywhere. She later needed staples to close one of the gashes.
Cops tracked down 38-year-old Johnson and arrested him on a slew of felony charges including assault with a deadly weapon (his fists).
Another black mark on the image of MMA, as Johnson joins the ranks of War Machine, Thiago Silva and many other stars of the sport that have gone under the microscope for domestic violence. It’s certainly a worrying trend.
The assault allegedly went down in August of this year, but this is the first that anyone has heard of it. Johnson remains in a Fresno jail on $120K bail.
