UFC Fight Night 61 Prelims Results: Reneau Submits Andrade In One

UFC Fight Night 61 goes down tonight (Sunday February 22nd, 2015) from the Ginasio Gigantinho in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Te headlining action is a heavyweight bout between ex-champion Frank Mir and the hometown favorite Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva. There are five fights to look forward to on the preliminary card, and they are going live at 530 PM ET on Fight Pass and 6 PM ET on FOX Sports 1.

The feature prelim bout is at women’s bantamweight, as Jessica Andrade faces Marion Reneau. Andrade stalking, ripping with body shots. Reneau tries to clinch up, they separate and exchange wildly. Reneau lands a combo but Andrade drops her on the counter, “Bruiser” wraps up a triangle as Andrade follows her to the mat. This looks tight, Andrade taps! Reneau with the first round win by triangle.

A welterweight battle between Matt Dwyer and William Macario was up next. Patolino lands a huge left hook, but ate 10 punches and kicks before landing it. Dwyer working from the outside well, mixing up kicks and punches. Superman punch now, and Macario is out cold! Wow, great first round knockout for Dwyer there. KOTN anyone?

Mike De La Torre and Tiago Trator meet at featherweight and open the fight with a clinch battle against the fence. MDLT getting off with some nice punches, Trator holds up well. Big left hooks from De La Torre now, and Trator drops, he is out and De La Torre goes for the finish. Terribly late stoppage. First round knockout for MDLT.

Cody “Google Me” Gibson squares off with Douglas Silva in a bantamweight showdown to open the FOX Sports 1 card. It’s a fairly even striking battle early on, Gibson working at range and Silva looking for power shots to the body. Silva bleeding heavily from the eye, perhaps a clash of heads. “Google Me” turns it up in round two with right hands but Silva drops him hard with a right of his own. Gibson holds on but Silva was all over him there.

Big left hook now rocks Gibson, and he retaliates with a hilarious kick that he slips on. Amazing scrambles in round three as Silva manages to reverse a takedown twice in one go. Great exchanges to end the round on the feet, Silva takes the UD. Gibson shoulda googled him.

Ivan Jorge vs Josh Shockley opened the Fight Pass section of the card at 155 pounds. Shockley opened with a barrage of knees that rocked Jorge, but the Brazilian rallied back with a series of takedowns. He locked in a tight arm triangle on Shockley, but wasn’t able to get the tap.

Not much to speak of in round two as the crowd grows restless, Shockley arguably pulls it even. “Batman” looking one dimensional in the striking here. Lacklustre final round from both on the most part, although Jorge landed some good rushing punches. “Batman” wins an extremely forgettable unanimous decision.
