UFC 142: Jose Aldo KO's Chad Mendes to retain title
Posted on January 14, 2012, 11:52 PM by Anton GurevichJose Aldo is still the UFC Featherweight Champion, after defending his title for the third time with a devastating first round KO victory over Chad Mendes.
Aldo controlled the action inside the Octagon, not allowing Chad Mendes to execute his wrestling-based gameplan. Mendes had some success with leg kicks and one takedown that allowed him to take Aldo's back, but this fight was all about the champion finally proving himself after two disappointing performances against Kenny Florian and Mark Hominick. Aldo's kick dropped Chad Mendes like a sack of potatoes, as the referee Mario Yamasaki stopped the action just a few seconds before the end of Round 1.
The fight will be also remembered for Jose Aldo's celebration. As soon as the referee stopped the fight, triumphant Aldo ran outside the Octagon to celebrate with the ecstatic crowd at the HSBC Arena in Rio. It took several minutes before Aldo returned to the cage, not before congratulating his friends and teammates in the attendance.
Jose Aldo improves his MMA record to 21-1, extending his current winning streak to fourteen. The UFC Featherweight still has a few fights to offer for Aldo, with the winner of Hatsu Hioki vs. Bart Palaszewski (UFC 144), or the currently postponed Dustin Poirier vs. Erik Koch most likely to get the next shot.

This kid needs to move up to LW he's KILLING everybody.. i dont see ANYONE beating him at FW.. as matter of fact i don't see anyone beating him PERIOD but shit, there would be some INTERESTING matchups at LW...
1 second left on the clock, 180 knee to the face KO aperatous then starts a riot. That was something out of a Hollywood movie right there
Hell yea Jose Aldo
I think Bart vs Jose aldo would actually be pretty good
JOSE ALDO HAS ARRIVED
now It's more like Chad "I need a alone" Mendes
I know this might not be a popular thing to say because Aldo was clearly winning the fight up to that point but it would be interesting to see how it played out if Aldo didn't prevent the takedown with the fence grab. Aldo was winning the fight but maybe he holds him down the rest of the round and Aldo starts to tire and Mendes begins to have some success with his wrestling and we got a fight, more dramatic turnarounds have happened. Who knows though, just interesting to think about the effect that fence grab could have had.
I agree JD. I don't think Aldo would have won the 1st round but for the fence grab. He was about to be slammed and Mendes had done enough work with the knees and the TD that never was due to the fence grab to have won the first round. Great finish by Aldo but he is cheating ****.
Slammed? dude.. did u see those other takedown attempts??? He's like a cat.. he lands on his feet every time u try and bounces right back up. Fence or no Fence grab Mendes had NO chance whatsoever..
In all likelihood yes, that 's what probably would have happened but the fence grab prevented Aldo from going airborne. The rules about grabbing the fence are in place for this exact scenario, it prevented a takedown and we can only speculate to how long he would have stayed on the ground, it could have been half a second it could have been the rest of the round. From an objective standpoint you can't say it wasn't that big of a deal because one fighter was winning the fight up to that point, maybe that was the point where Mendes turns it around or maybe nothing changes. The rules are there for a reason and Aldo willingly broke them and gained a direct advantage in the fight with no consequence. It mostly just reminded me a lot of the article posted here a week or so ago arguing "in favor" of why as a fighter you should always cheat in mma.
cheating dosnt matter around here if you like that fighter, those things are often brushed off the shoulders of the fans and that it would of made no difference in the outcome.
aldo vs edgar would be huge. can't wait.
U mean Aldo VS Bendo?? U know Bendo is gonna demolish Frankie right? by the time Aldo finally moves up Edgar won't be champ.. i put money on that.. (LOTS OF IT)
You can't, you just can't.
Anyway it'll be better to see Edgar going down than Aldo going up in my opinion.
aldo vs edgar is gonna be more exciting than bendo. since we all now that FE has the heart of the lion who never quits and always pushes the pace. bendo is an exciting fighter but i still have a flashback on how pettis knock him out, i can see aldo doing desame but with different angles. aldos kick comes crazy with tremendous(rogan) power.
everyt ime i see you talking about betting a bunch of money of a fight, they always lose.
Maybe Hendo beats Edgar, but then Penn was gonna smash him, then Maynard, and before them a few others where Edgar was seen as the underdog. Fact is Edgar has surprised the doubters and even if he loses at some point in his career, there's no doubt he is one of the best LWs on the planet.
And if Aldo did go up to LW he would have trouble against any of the top 5. LW is a different league to any other division in MMA. there are so many beasts Aldo would be a small fish in an ocean whereas currently he is a massive fish in a small pond.
i agree ben is gonna be champion when he fight edgar, but 145 or 155 i dont see aldo losing
First of all Pettis did NOT knock Bendo out... he dropped him with an amazing kick that landed right on the button.. BUT.. Bendo got right back up... and Pettis edged out a decision because of that kick (on my scorecard Bendo got robbed but it was really really close. Anyway.. fast forward a year.. looking back at 2011, Bendo is a 10x better fighter than he was before (and he was already a freak of nature). He made Miller look like a Rookie... Dominated Guida.. dude is a problem! He has more tools going into a fight with Aldo than Edgar (including size and better striking).,.. by no means am i saying he would WIN... but he would have more of a chance to beat him than Edgar. Edgar got LUCKY that Maynard could not finish him (eventhough he has the tools to do so) Maynard just needs to step his game up and training with ALDO was the best thing he could do.
lets just see who will win after edgar vs hendo and apply ur MMA math theory on how bendo has more tools than edgar.
^ I didnt know Edgar was going to fight Dan Henderson? hahah jk
I would have to co-sign on that.. Edgar should go down (after Bendo ****s him up)
I think if Bendo wins we aren't likely to see the Champ vs. Champ fight for a while, it doesn't feel as 'super' if one of the champions hasn't defended their belt multiple times, like Frankie has.
i would like to see that to but you can't expect things that are not there already, its like saying id like to see gsp vs sonnet since sonnet will beat silva. its irrelevant. but its still gonna be a cool fight
I rather see Chael run through a Brazilian crowd.
lol hes gonna have about 50 stab wounds, shit wanderlei is gonna be waiting for him with an axe lol
Are you kidding me? Chael could take 50 Brazillians with no problem.
Not if they bring triangles.
This man is a monster. I still want to see him fight Hioki but I don't think anyone really thinks he's a threat to Aldo.
He could maybe fight the winner or Miller/Guillard?
Guillard vs Aldo would be a scary fight, I predict a dual KO round one via facial collapse.
Aldo would submit Guillard.
Dont forget that Guillard's ground game sucks sooooo much and especially this:
Four-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion, World jiu-jitsu champion, Black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
(taken right from ufc's website).
I think Aldo has the skills and the power to deal with Melvin but the ground in clearly where he has the biggest edge.
Yeah but how would he get him down? He's got no takedown skills and pulling guard isn't exactly a full-proof plan.
or he can go to middleweight and make Andy retire
Rock - sizors - paper
Bjj beats wrestlers - strikers beat bjj - wrestlers beat strikers.
Not really uhh - Aldo by knees to your face baby!!!!
great showing by Aldo ...Mendes was out gunned and out classed pure and simple just like Faber was.
with fights recently seeing wrestlers getting KO'd/TKO'd, maybe we can finally see fight predictions based on striking and not wrestling.
The fights were great, but it seemed like a lot of guys were brought in just to lose, to make the Brazilians look amazing tonight. Also, i've never herd of a more biased crowd in my life. Every time a Brazilian landed a punch everybody went nuts, but as soon as the opponent landed something the Boo's came out, they made a North American crown look unbiased and fair.
Go to America ...you will see a more biased crowd.
Mr. Aldo, you are so scary i bet you give yourself nightmares.
