UFC 189 Aldo vs. McGregor Extended Preview

UFC 189

We are now just a few weeks away from the most anticipated card of the year as UFC 189 is set to go down live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the MGM Grand Garden Arena on July 11, 2015. Headlined by dual title fights, all eyes are on the main event as reigning featherweight champion and pound-for-pound king Jose Aldo attempts to defend his title for the eighth time against Irish sensation, the “Notorious” Conor McGregor.

Having rose to stardom, McGregor is 5-0 in the UFC with four stoppages. Most recently, the Irishmen scored a devastating first-round knockout over Dustin Poirier back at September’s UFC 178 followed by a brutal second-round finish of Dennis Siver at UFC Fight Night 59 in January.

Aldo on the other hand, is coming off a hard-fought decision win over Chad “Money” Mendes last October in what turned out to be one of the best fights of the year.

The promotion, and hype for this event has hit all-time highs with the tension boiling over on a mega world tour that featured Aldo and McGregor traveling to many cities around the world to promote the fight. The challenger has clearly gotten under the skin of the champion, and the score will be settled in just a few weeks.

Due to the magnitude of the main event, the co-main event may be getting overlooked, as welterweight champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler is set to defend his title for the very first time against Canadian superstar Rory “Red King” MacDonald. Lawler recently won the belt over former champion Johny Hendricks at December’s UFC 181, while MacDonald is coming off of an impressive TKO victory over Tarec Saffiedine last October.

The two have actually met before, however, with Lawler scoring a close split-decision victory in an entertaining back and forth and battle back at UFC 167 in 2013.
