UFC 182 Donald Cerrone vs Myles Jury Fight Breakdown
UFC 182 goes down this Saturday (January 3rd, 2015) with  blockbuster line up for the first show of the new year. Of course the heated feud between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier as the headliner is getting a lot of attention, but the lightweight scrap between Donald Cerrone and Myles Jury has plenty of potential too.
“Cowboy” has proved to be one of the more exciting 155-pounders in the UFC/WEC, and he faces in “Fury” a new breed of up-and-coming athlete. Without further ado, the LowKickMMA UFC 182 Donald Cerrone vs Myles Jury fight breakdown.
Striking
An interesting mix of striking between these two, as Cerrone brings a Muay Thai base, and Jury more MMA-style striking. “Cowboy” has blasted only four with strikes, but remember he has an unbeaten 29-fight kickboxing resume too. “Fury” has put away seven from 15 by T/KO, but is not primarily known as a power striker.
I’d say it comes down to range, and one thing Jury will need to avoid in the stand up is Cerrone’s kicks. As we saw against Jim Miller and Eddie Alvarez, the former WEC lightweight champion has lethal accuracy. I think with the added weapons in Cerrone’s arsenal, I’ll call it 60-40 “Cowboy”
Takedowns
Since joining the UFC, Jury has actually failed to stuff any takedowns, giving him a TDD rate of 0%. That being said, he has only been sacked twice. “Fury” has quite an impressive 67% takedown success rate. Cerrone actually stuffs 67% of his opponents takedown attempts, and lands 46% of his own.
With both guys being so dangerous with their submissions, it’s a tough one to call really. It’s not as if a single takedown per round would give either fighter a huge advantage, as both have shown that they can get up very quickly. I’m calling it 50-50
Submissions
Yet again another category that both guys have shown brilliance in. Cerrone is an extremely dangerous grappler with 15 submissions from 25 wins. What makes him so effective is that he is so dangerous from pretty much anywhere in the octagon. Training out of Jackson’s in New Mexico clearly has brought Cerrone along leaps and bounds.
Jury is a BJJ black belt and has five submission wins to his credit, although three of the were due to punches. He actually started out in Jiu-Jitsu when he was in college, and made the switch to MMA from there. I’m giving the nod to the more experienced, and proven MMA grappler Cerrone at 60-40
So UFC 182 Donald Cerrone vs Myles Jury has all the chances of being a fight of the night performance in the co-main slot. It also has some huge title implications attached, as both guys are on impressive promotional streaks at present. Who you got?
