If we’re going to talk about BJJ athletes who use cannabis, we have to start with the legendary Eddie Bravo. For years, the creator of 10th Planet has been a big advocate for combat sports athletes to freely use cannabis.

Bravo himself is a widely known user of cannabis and CBD products as you’ve probably seen on multiple podcasts. He believes that there has been a huge propaganda campaign against cannabis to hide the plant’s true benefits.

Eddie has not only claimed that the use of cannabis helped his BJJ, but also unleashed his creativity. The creator of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu has stated many times that cannabis helped him create his popular system.

Today, there are 10th Planet schools all over the world teaching the techniques that Bravo innovated. For Eddie, this proved that cannabis has the ability to open a person’s mind and allow them to be creative.

Next on our list of the most known BJJ athletes who use cannabis is the darce master Jeff Glover. Jeff is known for being one of the most innovative minds in grappling, who has been influential in the martial art.

Glover has a big personality and a showman, who always wants to put on a show for the audience. While Jeff is a great BJJ practitioner, he has also been a longtime advocate.

If you follow Glover on Instagram, you can see that he is very open about his use of cannabis. The ADCC and EBI veteran claims that using the plant helps him in multiple ways.

Claiming it does everything from calming him down, while improving his training and innovating new techniques. Jeff has also participated in multiple BJJ/Cannabis infusion events like the popular High Rollerz tournaments.

Glover is an easy going guy, who loves rolling on the mats and smoking a good joint.

One of the BJJ athletes who use cannabis that you might not suspect is former ADCC champion Kron Gracie. Being the son of the legend Rickson Gracie, it would seem like using cannabis would be something that Kron wouldn’t do.

However, Kron has been fairly open about his cannabis use. In 2018, Kron appeared on B-Real of Cypress Hill’s podcast and talked openly about his use of sativa to improve his training.

Gracie went on to talk about the stigma that athletes who smoke and long-standing false claims around them.  He firmly stated that “you can be a functional athlete and smoke weed.”

Jake Shields is another one of the most well-known BJJ athletes who use cannabis. Even before retiring from MMA and going full time into BJJ competitions, Shields has been an advocate for cannabis.

In 2016, Shields was a speaker at the annual Cannathlete convention in California and stated this about athlete cannabis use. 

“It is a big part of training for a lot of people. I definitely don’t smoke everyday, but sometimes it is a good way to go in there and smoke a little bit and be more creative- like, sometimes you’re in a big training camp before a competition, it really makes training fun again.
