BJ Penn is not done fighting yet.

A report surfaced from MMA Fighting this afternoon revealing that the former UFC two-division champion will return against fellow longtime veteran Clay Guida at May’s UFC 237 from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“The Prodigy” is undoubtedly a legend of mixed martial arts (MMA). He was a pioneer in MMA and Brazilian jiu-jitsu known for his fighting spirit and willingness to take on any challenge. However, it’s been a tough road for the all-time great in recent years. He’s lost his last six fights in a row. Penn is without a win since he knocked out longtime rival Matt Hughes in late 2010.

He retired after a third loss to Frankie Edgar in July 2104, but returned as a featherweight in 2017. Consecutive losses to Yair Rodriguez, Dennis Siver, and Ryan Hall have tainted his otherwise historic legacy in the eyes of some. Penn most recently lost to Hall via heel hook where it looked like Penn’s knee was hurt. He’s apparently fine and will meet another elder statesman of fighting in Guida.

The Carpenter’ has won two out of his past three and dropped his latest match to Charles Oliveira at last June’s UFC 225. He has five out of his last 10 overall so could use a win against ‘The Prodigy.’ But not as badly as Penn, who could be pushed into retirement with a seventh loss without a win.

Penn has significant ties to Brazil. He was trained by Nova Unaio owner Andre Pedeneiras and spent his last camp there. It’s only fitting that the BJJ champ gets to fight one last time in Brazil.
