Johny Hendricks: I didn’t know I had to worry about GSP fighting Diaz

The saga surrounding the next fight for the UFC 170 lb. title continues on today. Top UFC Welterweight contender Johny Hendricks has done all he physically can to make his case for a title shot at GSP’s belt. However, even though he has soundly defeated Jon Fitch and Martin Kampmann and beaten Josh Koscheck, that title shot does not appear to be materializing anytime soon.  GSP has recently stated that he is still looking to fight the always polarizing Nick Diaz. Yesterday, Hendricks appeared on The MMA Hour to discuss his disdain at this unveiling:

“I was worried about (Anderson) Silva, GSP fighting Silva. I didn’t know I had to worry about someone in my own weight class. I was pissed GSP wanted this, you know what I mean? Who cares what they say about you, who cares what they say about anything and fight the number one contender. I did everything I could to put myself into that kind of position, and then just to get it revoked from me because GSP wants something else.”

“I’m actually fighting to get my title shot while he’s (Diaz) on suspension, then all of a sudden GSP throws his name in front of mine. I’m actually more mad at GSP. I’m not mad at anybody else but GSP for calling somebody else out. I think he is trying to stay away from me. You fight to prove you are worthy. I feel like I have proved that I can go with GSP and I should go with GSP and here he is keeping me out of that.”

Hendricks may have a point here, but does there come a time when he has to stop complaining about how the events have played out and just keep winning fights over top competition? Some thought he would not be denied with such an emphatic finish over the previously surging Kampmann, but there is a long list of fighters looking to take GSP down. And for the UFC, the fight with Hendricks is by far the smallest draw, as Diaz and of course Anderson Silva would both be absolute blockbusters. For now, Hendricks may have to fight again before he faces someone for the Welterweight title. It may not be fair, but it is just the unfortunate truth of the matter.
