Undefeated Khazak knockout artist Gennady “GGG” Golovkin staked his claimed as one of boxing’s biggest stars last weekend (October 17, 2015), demolishing Canadian David Lemieux in a middleweight title unification bout. Golovkin now holds the WBA and IBF middleweight belts, and has become the mandatory challenger to the WBC middleweight strap as well.
Reigning WBC middleweight boss Miguel Cotto will put his title on the line next month (November 21, 2015) against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in a highly anticipated affair. That being said, it’s thought that Golovkin will be faced off with the winner of that bout in a monstrous showdown sometime next year.
However, not everything is always so simple in boxing. First off, many believe that if Cotto is victorious he will try to avoid a fight with “GGG”. “Canelo”, however, seems more interested in meeting Golovkin, and the Mexican is actually the favorite over Cotto.
The barriers do not stop there, however. Cotto, and Canelo, despite battling for a 160-pound championship, will meet at a catch weight of 155-pounds. That being said, Golovkin recently stated that he will not accept a catch weight against fight either man.
That may be an issue as Alvarez, who spoke with FightHype.com, said that although he is definitely interested in scrapping with “GGG”, he won’t fight him at 160-pounds:
“If he wants to fight with me, let him come down to 155 and I’ll fight him whatever day he wants.”
“At this moment, my body isn’t ready for 160 pounds. Maybe 1 or 2 more years I’ll be ready for 160, I don’t know, but I’d be delighted to fight someone like Gennady. He’s a great fighter and I think it would be a great fight. I’d be delighted to get him in a fight.”
With boxing having a limited number of intriguing bouts left at some points, it seems as if a fight between Golovkin, and Cotto/Canelo is almost a necessity. Also, “GGG” has stated that he plans on becoming the undisputed, unified middleweight champion and he will need the WBC belt to do so.
Will the knockout machine in Golovkin be forced to bite the bullet and move down in weight to meet the winner of next month’s clash?
