Dana White On Cub Swanson: I’m Very Excited For His Future, He’s Going To Get What He Wants

UFC featherweight Cub Swanson recently shot up to the No. 2 spot in the official UFC rankings after turning in a rousing five-round decision victory over tough No. 10-ranked Jeremy Stephens in the main event of last weekend’s (June 28, 2014) UFC Fight Night 44 from San Antonio, Texas.

After a lengthy hiatus to clear up a nagging elbow injury, Swanson returned triumphantly to notch his sixth straight victory, a win streak that is only surpassed by dominant 145-pound champion Jose Aldo, who will defend the belt against Chad Mendes at August’s UFC 176 from Los Angeles.

Swanson believes he deserves a title shot, and apparently UFC President Dana White agrees with him. Speaking in his weekly interview on the UFC’s “Download,” White voiced his approval of Swanson’s latest win, noting good things are in the cards for the Jackson’s MMA product:

“Let me tell you what, Jeremy is ranked No. 10 but he’s not the number 10 fighter. He’s better than that, and Cub took big f****** shots from him early, ate his shots and came back and fought a beautiful fight. I’m very excited for his future. Cub’s going to get what he wants, let’s just put it that way.”

That’s some high praise from the President, and you’d be hard-pressed to argue against it. Swanson has looked nothing short of spectacular after losing to Ricardo Lamas in 2011, and he deserves his shot at the belt.

But if Aldo somehow loses to Mendes, especially in anything near controversial fashion, we could see an immediate rematch that ties up the belt for a year or more.

In that case, Swanson would simply be the victim of extremely unfortunate timing. However, he should have his day for the belt in the near future, and he’d obviously prefer if it was against Aldo so he has the chance to avenge his highlight reel WEC loss to “Junior.”

When his title shot finally comes, will Swanson have improved enough to walk away with the title?
