Zane Frazier Vs Kevin Rosier
There was a clear example of a corner throwing the towel all the way back at UFC 1 in 1993 during a quarterfinal fight between Kevin Rosier and Zane Frazier.
Truth be told, it was a sloppy fight not helped by the high altitude in Denver, which resulted in both men gassing out as the first round progressed.
Following a grappling exchange, Frazier returned to his feet looking so fatigued that he could barely stand.
Rosier capitalized, sending him to the mat by clubbing him on the back of the head several times (which was not illegal at the time), then continued with more punches and foot stomps to that particularly vulnerable area of the skull.
Referee stoppages were not allowed at that fledgling stage of the sports development, and so mercifully Frazier’s corner threw in the towel, which landed at Rosier’s foot, signalling that the fight was over.
The stoppage came not a moment too soon, as Frazier would actually be rushed to hospital afterwards suffering from respiratory failure.
