Two thugs in Brazil made a huge mistake when they tried to rob Monique Bastos in December of 2015, unaware that she was a professional mixed martial artist who had fought in the respected Jungle Fights promotion.
The 23-year-old Bastos had been walking to Jiu-Jitsu class with a couple of friends in Acailandia in Western Brazil when the two thieves on a motorbike cornered them and demanded that they hand over their mobile phones.
Noticing that the two muggers didn’t have weapons, Bastos proceeded to knock their motorbike over and then tackled one of the muggers with a rear-naked choke, using that to pull him to the ground as his accomplice fled the scene in panic.
The 5′ 3”, 115-pound Bastos then transitioned to a triangle choke, where she was able to subdue her attacker for 15 minutes until the police arrived and arrested him.
During that time, another onlooker filmed the humiliated thug, Wesley Sousa de Araujo, sobbing, begging for mercy and calling out for his parents, while remaining securely trapped in Bastos’ vice-like grip.
