Vitor Belfort Issues Statement: I Never Gave Up Fighting At UFC 173, The UFC Replaced Me

After yesterday’s shocking announcement that testosterone-replacement therapy (TRT) will be banned by both the NSAC and UFC, scheduled UFC middleweight title challenger and TRT poster boy Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort supposedly issued his withdrawal from his UFC 173 main event title bout against champion Chris Weidman.

Lyoto Machida was quickly scheduled to step in against Weidman on the May 24 card.

However, just moments ago, Belfort issued a statement on his Facebook page entitled, “Vitor Belfort hasn’t given up the fight, was forced to retire,” instead shifting the focus to his claim that the UFC forced to him to step down from his long-awaited title shot:

“I never gave up fighting in UFC 173 and never mentioned it. Therefore, all information posted in any mass media advertising that is not true.

What I announced was that I will be resigning “TRT” and not “giving up the fight” to continue my dream of fighting.

The UFC decided to put another opponent in my place because I didn’t have time to fit the new rules of the NSAC. According to the UFC, I will face the winner of Weidman vs Lyoto within the new regulations of all the Athletic Commissions.

I’m sorry that this happened, and I appreciate the strength and understanding of all fans, sponsors, UFC and athletic commissions.”

It appears there has been a bit of a misunderstanding here, as Belfort claims he never withdrew from UFC 173 as was previously reported. Regardless, Belfort is out of one of the biggest fights of his life, and all because of TRT.

The controversial TRT cast a big enough black eye on MMA, and it’s good to see it gone for what looks like forever. No, that alone won’t entirely curb the problem of PEDs within the UFC, but at least it stops fighters from getting a doctors’ pass to do so.

We’ll have to wait and see if Belfort doe fight the winner of Weidman vs. Machida. It’s arguable that he may not be quite the same fighter once his body gets re-accustomed to not having the extra testosterone.

But with “The Phenom” the scapegoat for everything that was wrong with TRT and Anderson Silva rapidly recovering, “The Spider” may step right into Belfort’s perceived title shot.

Unless Machida wins, because he and Silva are good friends.

As expected, the outlawing of TRT in MMA is already causing a serious mess.

  • Silva vs Belfort 2 for the number 1 contender fight if Weidman wins. If Machida wins Silva is going to fight "superfights" or just visually attractive fights for nice paydays til he's ready to retire.

  • "It’s arguable that he may not be quite the same fighter once his body gets re-accustomed to not having the extra testosterone." I love that line, real real diplomatic.

Any lowkickers that have trained with protein shakes ? Did you notice the difference training with or without ? Yeah imagine getting shots of pure testosterone than having to train without it.

Nothing arguable about it, Vitor is gonna have to change everything.

    • I think Belfort will go back to going the distance with people, he will lose power, speed, and some of his gas tank.

    • Protein shakes don't make any difference for me whatsoever. I perform the same with or without. I've done the whole supplement thing. Tested many brands. Pre-workouts and Creatine too. All that shit is a waste of time and money. I train fully natural and have been for a long time and i feel like a fucking beast! My test levels are off the charts and all it takes was beasting it out in the gym, lifting heavy and proper diet. The only time i'll use a shake is when my schedule is crazy and i don't have the time to prepare a meal to get my protein fix!

      • @XP..I don't mind the old protein/bannana smoothie for breakfast with a shot of coconut oil mixed in. My ex-girlfriends flatmate was separating 24 egg whites a day and giving his ass a dirty needle of testostorone…man he looked bad, no neck, pimples, and a temper like john Mac enroe. People should see a dietician/sports nutritionist because some of the retail supplements shops tell young kids so much bullshit and they end up spending $300 month or more on supplements. Fresh and organic is always best. I take vitamin c,b, omega 3 and magnesium supplement as part of my routine.

        • True that!! I dont mind them either… they're just not necessary. sometimes i have 1 just cause i feel like it. separating egg whites is another one of those ridiculous things people do. They really need an update and get off the old ridiculous theories about egg yolk. separating the egg whites is stupid, the yolk is FULL of valuable nutrition and not anywhere near the cholesterol nightmare some old medical science claims it to be. You're actually missing out by skipping it! There are way more vitamins in the yolk, than in the egg whites and way more minerals too. 90 percent of an egg's calcium is in its yolk; 93 percent of its iron content is in the yolk. The yolk has vitamins A, D, E and K, the egg whites do not. The only reason for skipping yolk should be poor health…. shit i'm writing a book… LOL but that's how crazy it drives me when i hear about people separating egg whites.. lmao I know a bunch of those type of guys too though, they go to my gym and all i do is shake my head every time i see them with a thousand supplement pills and 4 different kind of shakes.. I stick to organic too, the Farmer's market rules!!

  • He was going to fail the drug test obviously

  • personally i wouldnt want belfort fighting for a title with such little time off TRT i just dont think he would be the same. im expecting the true phenom to be ready to do damage by fall against machida or weidman

  • Do you think maybe he should have stuck with the story the UFC's PR people came up with?

Sorry Vitor, but without your supplements, the UFC is just not that into you…

  • One thing I don't understand is how vitor was always saying that he needed trt for his every day life but now suddenly he doesn't? I guess it wasn't as important as he was making it out to be if he's willing to give it up so easily for a title shot.

    • Vitor never said he "doesn't" need it… and he's not willing to give it up easily at all, he has NO CHOICE! It's either get off it or retire… It's as simple as that!
