UFC On Fox 9 Aftermath: Lower Weight Classes Shine In California

UFC on Fox 9 is in the books and I thoroughly enjoyed every bout on the card. We got to see a wide array of talent from the lower weight divisions go at it, and the most impressive performance of the night has to be Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson.

How to KO a KO artist

‘Mighty Mouse’ came in to this fight with a ‘clear’ power disadvantage. Pundits had labelled Benavidez in the lead up to the bout, claiming that he had a clear-cut plan: go out there and KO Johnson. Unfortunately for Benavidez that is a lot easier said than done.

I personally thought that I would be in for a 25 minute, back and forth scrappy battle. How wrong was I? Johnson started out with his speedy footwork and elusiveness, making Benavidez miss with his sturdy power shots. Johnson then uncorked a savage right hook to the jaw as J-Be came lunging in. It was lights out as Benavidez laid googly eyed on the mat.

Urijah Faber is still getting better

‘The California Kid’ has always been a top-flight contender and his record speaks for itself. The former WEC Bantamweight kingpin proved last night that he is ultimately ready for yet another title shot.

Things seemed to slow down for Faber once he joined the UFC; losses to Dominick Cruz and Renan Barao could well have spelled out Faber’s last days as a top level competitor. Once again Faber proved us all wrong, wins over Yuri Alcantara, Scott Jorgensen, Ivan Menjivar and his slick submission over highly touted Michael McDonald show that the sky is truly the limit for the Alpha Male scrapper.

Abel Trujillo is a bad man

Abel Trujillo and Roger Bowling met in a rematch of their UFC Fight Night: Conbdit vs. Kampmann 2 bout. The first scarp was ended in a NC after Trujillo landed an unintentional illegal knee. The scrap had started with fireworks and the unsavoury conclusion was very disappointing.

The second bout at UFC on Fox 9 was proof that Trujillo can put guys away. After a scrappy first round, Trujillo really took it to Bowlin, who was unable to survive the vicious onslaught from ‘Killa’. The ref stepped in to save Bowling’s bacon and I’m excited to see where Trujillo goes next at 155.

Honorable mention goes to Cody McKenzies weird shorts, Edson Barboza and Danny Castillo for their epic battle and to Chad Mendes for gutting out a sinus infection en route to his win over Nik Lentz.
