With performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) currently the most talked-about and controversial topic in all of mixed martial arts (MMA) right now, the scourge they cast on the still-growing sport and the UFC’s subsequent efforts to curb their use have been brought to the forefront of any and all media coverage concerning fighting.
In an effort to clean up the sport in a big way, the UFC will enact an all-new drug testing protocol at this July’s UFC 189, and indeed some fighters have already begun to experience the effect of the new, more stringent guidelines.
But there was a time not all that long ago when fighters reportedly used PEDs in rampant fashion, resulting in a number of high-profile failures, suspensions, and even canceled fights. While rumors continue to circulate today that a high number of fighters are still on the juice, the sport’s biggest promotion has taken some absolutely massive steps to remove the negative stigma MMA has experienced for years.
That’s going to take time, money, and even more time to get sorted out, and even then the use of banned substances probably won’t go away altogether. It should be much different and much better, however; potentially leading to a cleaner era of fighting where the fighters are rewarded for their hard work and dedication rather than the effectiveness of whatever steroid they were using in that training camp.
