Tatsuya Kawajiri To Undergo Surgery For Detached Retina, Return Date Unknown

Former Shooto world champion Tatsuya Kawajiri recently made his UFC debut by submitting tough prospect Sean Soriano at UFC Fight Night 34. Although he didn’t fare as well in his next Octagon bout, dropping a UFC Fight Night 39 decision to gritty veteran Clay “The Carpenter” Guida, “Crusher” still played his part in a rousing “Fight of the Night”-winning bout.

Sitting with an impressive 5-1 record since making his way down to featherweight in September 2011, Kawajiri had been linked to a September 20 bout with Darren “The Damage” Elkins in his native Japan.

Unfortunately, news comes today that Kawajiri will have to put those plans on hold indefinitely. According to MMA Fighting, the Japanese star has a detached retina that he will undergo surgery for. Doctors have no set date for “Crusher’s” return, as this will be the third time he has been operated on for a detached retina in his left eye.

Longtime UFC middleweight Michael Bisping recently returned from a lengthy hiatus due to detached retina, and the complications proved that it can be a debilitating injury for an MMA fighter for obvious reasons. The 36-year-old “Crusher” is now on his third, so we here at LowKick MMA wish the hard-nosed competitor a quick and effective return to the Octagon.
