Steven Seagal says GSP can’t hang with Anderson Silva

Yesterday, martial arts movie actor Steven Seagal appeared on “The MMA Hour” to discuss a variety of topics with host Ariel Helwani. What followed were some quite interesting statements. Seagal is known to be in Anderson Silva’s corner from time to time, so of course he gave his take on the topic of Silva versus GSP. He believes that the two should meet in the Octagon, but GSP could not hang with Silva. His quotes on the long-awaited superfight:

“I think in this situation size matters, and I think that Anderson has the distinct advantage not only in size and weight, but also in his skill and his ability. I don’t want to say Anderson would run right though him, but I think he will decisively win.”

“One of the things that a master looks at when they look at a fighter is the history of the fighter. When you look at the history of the fighter, you look at their very best fights, their best work, and their worst. If you look at Anderson’s worst fights, they’re not bad. He still looks pretty good.”

“If you look at GSP’s worst fight, you look at the thing he did with (Jake) Shields in Canada, that was atrocious. I just didn’t think the technique and the fighting skill was there in that instance. Would I call him great? In my words, no.”

Some harsh criticism for one of the best fighters to ever compete in MMA. Seagal may not have much respect for GSP’s game, and perhaps beating Shields was not his finest hour, but GSP’s accomplishments in the Octagon cannot be denied. Seagal wasn’t done there however, and moved on to address a comment by Randy Couture, who said the only way he would come out of retirement was to face Seagal:

“I’m kind of confused as to why he would say that. All I can say is, I’m here. Anybody can find me anytime and anyplace. If Randy really wants to fight me, he can fight me anytime he wants. It’ll be for free, and it’ll be some place where there are no witnesses. Oh no, I don’t play by rules. That’s not how I fight.”

Quite the polarizing interview from Seagal. Is he trying to drum up some controversy and media exposure with his strong proclamations, or is this just truly how he feels? Do the words of Steven Seagal actually apply to today’s MMA’s world? What do you think?
