Shane Roller Announces Retirement On Twitter After UFC On FX 5 Loss

Shane Roller’s five year career as an MMA fighter has come to an end.

The lightweight took to Twitter after his first round submission loss to Jacob Volkmann at UFC on FX 5 to announce that he will no longer compete as a fighter.

“Looks like I’m hanging up the gloves for good,” Roller said on his social media outlet. “It was fun, but time to move on. Sux that it ended like that. Now startn (sic) the next chapter!!”

Roller was choked out by Volkmann at the 2:38 mark of their bout on the main card of UFC on FX 5. It was Roller’s fouth loss in his last five fights and his career ends with a mark of 11-7. Much of 33-year-old’s career took place in the UFC and WEC as he’s faced the likes of Anthony Pettis, Jamie Varner, Melvin Guillard and Benson Henderson. He’s won three post-fight awards including knockout of the night (Thiago Tavares) and two submission of the night bonuses (Jamie Varner and Danny Castillo). After beginning his career 10-3, Roller has hit the skids and fell to 11-6 before the Volkmann loss. He struggled once the UFC absorbed the WEC and went 2-4 with the promotion.

It is not yet known what Roller’s future holds.

  • The guy should not be so hard on himself..He has fought beasts and if he hangs them up he has nothing to be ashamed of

  • yea he was thrown at some killers right from the get go. i just hate to see him retire so young!

  • Hopefully he will be able to find a place within the sport as an analyst or something. He has some good experience to draw on.

  • Decent fighter but unfortunately only a low tier UFC fighter and right now the UFC has no room for low tier guys in the LW division.
Guy could do very well in Strikeforce or Bellator.

Will remember him for his spectacular KO over Thiago Tavares, the lay and pray decision that made his opponent (blanked on his name) shout “,you wanna fight? Fight me!” and the crazy KO from Guillard.
