Roy Nelson Slated to Fight Stipe Miocic at UFC 161

Following the unfortunate news that UFC interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao would be scrapped from UFC 161 due to a foot injury, an announcement was made that Dan Henderson versus Rashad Evans was now the main event of the June 15th card. And now, it appears that the UFC is making quick efforts to beef up the card, adding surging heavyweight Roy ‘Big Country’ Nelson to the card to fight Stipe Miocic.

Nelson has famously been on a roll as of late, dispatching Dave Herman, Matt Mitrione, and Cheick Kongo all in rapid succession with first round knockouts. Miocic, on the other hand, will look to get back into the winning column after dropping his last fight to Stefan Struve at UFC on Fuel TV 5. The fight was confirmed earlier tonight by MMA Junkie, and may be the cause for UFC 161 having a rarely seen six-fight main card.

Nelson had been rumored as a potential replacement for Mark Hunt vs. Junior dos Santos, as Hunt had been involved in a highly-publicized struggle to get his visa in order to travel to Las Vegas. While the need never materialized, this recent announcement of ‘Big Country’s’ next bout may be the cause for excitement, but it does little to prove Nelson’s worth as a true legitimate title contender.

Miocic is a game fighter for sure, and only recently suffered his first loss. But he lacks a top-ten resume, and may actually stand to gain much more than Nelson actually would with a victory. So while fan favorite Nelson has been highly touted for his string of knockouts, one can’t forget the days when he faced truly top competition in JDS, Fabricio Werdum, and even Frank Mir. Those outcomes were not as favorable, and while I tend to agree that Nelson has upped his game since those one-sided affairs, it’s still difficult to label him a favorite against any one of those opponents. What is your opinion of this bout for Nelson? Does it truly get him anywhere?

  • Nelson was on standby for a really big potential fight and now that this won't be happening he should be fighting a bigger name…a guy who is in the win column

    • he was on standy for that fight but only because he was the only back up available, they weren't saying he is fighting for the #1 contender spot yet.

Miocic is actually really good, only has one loss ad had some serious hype not too long ago.

      Good fight

    • is roy nelson allowed to join the biggest looser?

  • i really dont understand why bigfoot has earned a title shot at cain, dos santos will surely destroy him and mark hunt for sure, i think mark hunt beat the skyscraper because the skyscraper was out of shape, and no heart at all, he was destroying hunt in the ground and he easily take him down, y the heck was his hands down and fighting hunt in a stand up, its like hit me and lets see if it hurts, clearly im not a fan of the skyscraper anymore, i think this year 2013, overeeem will dominate the ufc heavyweight division.

    • Okay, i usually never reply on comments here but Struve has no heart???
      Thats just wrong,
1st: you should watch Struve vs Stojnic.
2nd: Hunt broke Struve's jaw and Stefan still wanted to continue.

      • skyscraper was out of shape,he was destroying hunt in the ground, and suddenly hunt is destroying him in the stand up then he took him to the ground and destroyed hunt suddenly a stand up with the skyscraper hands down. What a s2pid person the skyscraper is.

  • so who is the hulk fighting now?
it was soa palelei vs. miocic originally? is he injured?

  • Bullshit match up for big country … 4 fight wins in a row and he gets guy that just get destroyed by struve the guy that was destroyed by BIG COUNTRY … ????????? 🙁

    • Stipe is a game fighter. Hes a former golden glove champion and ncaa division I wrestler. He actually won the 1st round vs Struve, and if i remember correctly it was a slip that eventually costed him the tko loss.
This should be a good fight. Looking forward to it.

    • Well Roy was possibly fighting JDS, the man who more than destroyed him.

  • Don't agree with this move. Big step down for Nelson given his recent track record.

  • The match ups never made sense in the UFC, didn't they? Sometimes it's MMA math, sometimes it's the perfect timing for someone, who's not already booked or it's the immediate rematch stupidity. Lately it's decided by hype and sometimes they simply get matched up by how much they are liked by the owners. And we all know what Dana thinks about Roy. I don't like him as a fighter at all, but this is absolutely not cool.

  • Roy via KO

  • Stipe via decision.

  • roy via winning the biggest looser in the next episode of it.

  • Am I the only one who see's this as a win-win for fans and Roy?

First off, I'd never complain about more Roy Nelson.

Second, after this fight his contract is up. Thus, he can renegotiate his contract and get paid more for the BIG fights that he deserves.

Roy Nelson vs Mark Hunt would be a fight for the ages. In a way I kinda don't want it to materialize because I'm a huge fan of both.
