Roy Nelson looks to make everybody happy with next bout

Roy ‘Big Country’ Nelson is riding a three-fight winning streak in the UFC Heavyweight division, with each victory coming by way of first-round (T)KO. The good run has put him back into contention in the UFC’s heaviest division, a far cry from when Nelson lost 3 out of 4 and Dana White publicly stated that he needed to make a change.

The hefty Shaolin kung-fu practicioner must have agreed, as he’s put losses to Junior dos Santos, Fabricio Werdum, and Frank Mir behind him. Nelson now wants a big fight, one that may not end so easily with a Big Country overhand right. Daniel Cormier and the heavy-hitting Mark Hunt are likely next opponents. Nelson spoke up about both of these options after his win Saturday (transcribed by ESPN):

“I want to fight the best in the world. And fighting Daniel, you know, he’s an Olympian, I’d like to welcome him to UFC.”

“As for Mark Hunt, if he gets past [dos Santos] that would be great. If he doesn’t, I’d still fight Mark Hunt because the fans want to see that one. “

“I’m all about making everybody happy.”

Indeed Nelson has been making fans quite happy as of late with his thunderous knockouts. However, a bout with either Cormier or Hunt would most likely be a much more difficult fight and a true test of Nelson’s skills. He’s struggled with top-level heavyweights who constantly get in his face and utilize a high-volume game like dos Santos and Werdum did. He will also need to improve his cardio should he wish to contend with the former Olympian Cormier, as Frank Mir exposed Nelson’s gas tank in their one-sided affair.

Either way, Roy Nelson will soon have a marquee bout in front of him. Can he step up to the plate and truly ascend to the top level of the UFC?

  • Travis Browne

    • Travis Browne or Daniel Cormier for sure.

Cormier shouldn't fight Jones right now, Jones has too many other better more logical options.

Browne and Cormier are both waiting around doing nothing.

    • i think the more fatter roy nelson gets, the more difficult to beat him, i think he can be a good santa claus this Christmas, dude he can be a good substitute for santa claus the long beard and the big tummy.

  • That's a great idea that hasn't been discussed.

  • Jones is lacking opponents at 205 IMO , unless you want to see him beat guys for the second time. Glover and Alexander are the only 2 contenders that have not already been beaten by Jones. Outside of that he has cleaned out the division. If Cormier isn't willing to fight Cain they should limit him fighting top contenders and clearing out the division or get him to fight at 205.

    • how bout gegard, i think gegard will easily destroy glover.

  • put ANY champion between Big Country and his meal and Big Country will win.

  • I like this guy more every fight. And I didnt like him at all when he first showed up on TUF.
I still dont want him to be the champ but since he keeps knocking guys out and can take a beating like Homer Simpson I hope he gets to fight at least 3 times a year.

  • Roy Nelson vs. Mark Hunt would be a barn burner.

  • Ya Roy Nelson vs Mark Hunt forsure!!!… See who can take the most brain damage before one ends up with a flashlight in there face

  • Didn't Dana say that Hunt would get a title shot if he beat JDS? What happened to that. I would rather see that than a fight with Big Country any day. Honestly, I really wouldn't care if Nelson retired tomorrow. I have no interest in seeing him fight. If you happen to be a fan, cool. To each their own. I just don't see the draw.

  • “I’m all about making everybody happy.” –> Then looks at Dana White 🙂
