NSAC Threatens To Fine Chael Sonnen $250,000 If He Competes At Metamoris 4

It looks like “The American Gangster” might not be testing his hand in submission-only fighting after all.

Earlier today the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) revealed they plan on fining Chael Sonnen $250,000 per drug test violation should he compete in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu promotion’s fourth event.

The former UFC middleweight and light-heavyweight title contender/disgraced drug-user is expected to meet BJJ standout Andre Galvao in the main event of Metamoris 4 this weekend (August 9, 2014). But, the NSAC plan on stopping that from happening…. despite grappling not actually being fighting.

Jeremy Botter provided the news via his twitter account:

“NSAC director Bennett did not want to discuss Sonnen story this morning at their office due to ongoing circumstances. Multiple sources confirm NSAC has threatened to fine Sonnen $250,000 per failed drug test violation if he competes at Metamoris. Sonnen camp’s contention is that grappling is not fighting and suspension shouldn’t cover it. Sonnen has hired Vegas lawyer Ross Goodman to represent him in the case.”

The news will come as a huge blow to Sonnen who found himself out of a job as a Fox analyst when he was sacked for his multiple-failed drug tests. Recent odds have the 37-year old as low as a +1600 underdog against Galvao; they may drop down even more now.

When asked if they would get involved in the situation, the California State Athletic Commission responded: “no, it’s not full contact.”

The NSAC’s attempt to block Sonnen competing will not be straightforward, however. The commission have no grounds to block the former fighter from competing on as grapplers aren’t licensed as fighters and they are not drug tested. So blocking a Jiu-Jitsu match is out of their jurisdiction.

But the fact that they are trying is more bad news for Sonnen.

  • I'm not going to pretend I know the procedures or rights or wrongs for this kind of thing but personally I think they went way overboard with Chael. I mean they took everything from him and now they're chasing him to another promotion that isn't even MMA. I don't see why he got hit so hard of all people you'd think they'd cut Chael some slack because he was so good for the UFC and more so Fox. I think he was a great analysist and shouldn't have been fired from Fox, fighting in the UFC I understand

    • The UFC isn't threatening with the fine its the Nevada Athletic State Commission. Completely different organisation compared to the UFC. It doesn't matter what Chael did for the UFC, he lied right in the face of the UFC, Dana White, Fox and most importantly his fans. He is a lying scumbag, he deserves the fines.
