Carlos Condit Sees Clearer Path To Title Shot With MacDonald Win

After a 14-month sit on the sidelines recovering from the torn ACL he suffered in his UFC 171 TKO loss to no. 3-ranked Tyron Woodley, former interim welterweight champ Carlos Condit made a successful return to the Octagon by bludgeoning tough Brazilian Thiago Alves in the main event of last Saturday’s (May 30, 2015) UFC Fight Night 67 from Goiania, Brazil.

The win instantly reinserted ‘The Natural Born Killer’ right back into the crowded 170-pound title mix, putting him potentially one or two fights away from another title shot depending on what happens between Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald at July’s UFC 189.

And not only did it give Condit a much-needed victory to remind fans of how effective he truly is, but his brutal combo of elbows that decimated Alves also showcased his brutal Muay Thai skills honed at Albuquerque’s famed Jackson’s MMA. Condit appeared alongside Jackson on last night’s Inside MMA to discuss the fight-sealing combo:

“We’ve been working on that elbow and that elbow combination for a couple of camps now, and it just, I saw the opening; we knew that coming up the middle was probably going to be a good strategy on Alves. And yeah, it was very effective.”

Condit famously called out for a title shot at the winner of Lawler vs. MacDonald after his win, something that he expanded upon that philosophy last night:

“Yeah, I mean initially, in the post-fight interviews, I was asking to fight the guy who has the belt, whether it’s Rory or whether it’s Robbie, here whenever the next title fight after that is. We’ll see how it goes; we’ll see how it plays out. I think if it’s Rory MacDonald there’s probably a better chance of me getting that title shot because we have history, but we’ll just see how things play out.”

So with a big return win under his belt, Condit will wait to see how the welterweight title scene plays out this summer. Was his victory over Alves already enough to get him another shot at gold?
