Michael McDonald on rumored Barao fight: I’m ready to fight anybody in the world

UFC Bantamweight contender Michael McDonald is used to the spotlight of the UFC, having knocked out former WEC Bantamweight king Miguel Torres with ease in his most recent bout. After that, however, he decided to have surgery on an ailing hand injury that had plagued him since his first UFC bout. Now, with his hand on the mend, McDonald remains calm while there is talk of him facing interim Bantamweight champion Renan Barao if Dominick Cruz is unable to fight in the foreseeable future. Still, this doesn’t faze the young fighter, who discussed the opportunity earlier today with MMAJunkie:

“I really stand by what I’ve said in previous interviews: I feel right now that I’m ready to fight anybody in the world. I really will accept whoever they put in front of me, no matter who it is. I feel like I’m ready, skill-wise, to take on anybody they put in front of me, and if that’s who they’re talking about, then that’s cool. There’s nothing on the books, but we’re just excited that I’m healthy enough and that everything is ready that I’m going to start fight training at a comfortable pace, and I’m going to start getting ready for whatever the call will be.”

Very confident words from a truly rising contender, McDonald appears ready to take on the top contenders at 135 lbs. This should come as no surprise to MMA fans everywhere, as McDonald has been destroying opponents from day one as an extremely gifted combatant. Now he will face the true cream of the crop in potential bouts with Barao and/or Cruz. McDonald sits with an impressive 15-1 record in MMA, having demolished all 4 UFC opponents put in his path. He seems rather calm and collected for a fighter of only twenty-one years, but still, a fight with the 29-1 Barao would be a tough test for any Bantamweight. Can ‘Mayday’ rise to the top at such a young age and beat Jon Jones’ age record for a champion?

  • Barao will be champ one day. If I am wrong I will be very surprised.

  • Both are studs but I'd give Renan the edge. Would love to see this fight of Cruz can't go in early 2013.
