Matt Brown: I Don’t Necessarily Have A Set Gameplan For Robbie Lawler
No. 5-ranked UFC welterweight Matt Brown will fight in the biggest bout of his career when he steps into the Octagon to face No. 1 contender Robbie Lawler in the main event of tomorrow night’s (July 26, 2014) UFC on FOX 12 from the SAP Center in San Jose, California.
“The Immortal” has won an impressive seven straight bouts, with his last being a come-from-behind knockout of No. 15-ranked Erick Silva in the main event of May’s UFC Fight Night 40 from Cincinnati, Ohio. But he has yet to beat a top 10-ranked fighter throughout his illustrious run, and he’ll be facing the top of the heap this Saturday.
Despite that fact, the tough-as-nails Brown isn’t going into the pivotal headliner with a set gameplan. “The Immortal” spoke up to AXS TV’s Inside MMA to discuss preparing for “Ruthless”:
“I try not to ever expect anything in a fight, right. I’m coming into this fight looking forward to just simply fighting. If he goes for a takedown, that’s his choice and I’m prepared for that.
I don’t necessarily have any gameplan as in, a hundred percent going for a takedown, a hundred percent stand and strike; it’s all about, just like Bruce Lee said, just be like water, keep your mind open, keep your mind clear, allow the fight to progress naturally and organically, and just it allow it to fall wherever it may. I’m ready for whatever happens.”
That may seem like a nonchalant gameplan (or lack thereof) from Brown, but it’s his calm demeanor that keeps him alive when he gets into bad spots like he did against Silva and dangerous prospect Jordan Mein. Brown was rocked by body shots in both of those fights, and most expect him to be faced with a heavy torrent of them from noted power slugger Lawler.
With a title shot on the line, it’s time for Brown to prove he is truly “Immortal” by defeating one of the toughest fighters to ever step into the Octagon. Will he add a top-ranked star to his growing list of victims tomorrow?
