Manager: Chris Weidman vs. Jacare Souza ‘Might’ Be Next

A pivotal middleweight fight could very well take place in the Octagon before the year’s end.

According to Gilberto Faria, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza’s manager, a bout between “Jacare” and former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman ‘might’ be next:

“I believe that Weidman might be the next fight, in late-December or early-January, if that’s a good date for the UFC to book this fight,” Faria told MMA Fighting. “When we get closer to that date, we’ll see more clearly what the options are for Jacare’s next opponent.”

Souza is coming off of a brutal stoppage loss to interim 185-pound champion Robert Whittaker this past April. Prior to that, he had won two straight and 10 of his previous 11 fights. The Brazilian grappling guru is expected to return to training in the coming weeks after undergoing pectoral surgery shortly after his loss to Whittaker.

Weidman, on the other hand, was riding a disappointing three-fight losing streak that included losses to Luke Rockhold, Yoel Romero and Gegard Mousasi prior to his most recent fight. He last competed at UFC on FOX 25 this past July on Long Island, scoring a much-needed submission victory over Kelvin Gastelum.

With middleweight champion Michael Bisping set to defend his title against Georges St. Pierre at UFC 217 on Nov. 4 and Whittaker dealing with an injury, is this a fight you’d like to see?

The UFC refuses to give Weidman easy fights lol

He’s a top 5 middleweight, you don’t get easy fights when you’re a championship contender. Gastelum was probably his easiest opponent since Mark Munoz.

That is true. I am a Weidman supporter, which is different than a fan. A fan will want to see a guy no matter what. I want what’s best for him as a person. If he retired an just ran his gyms I would be ok. I hate watching him lose more than I like watching him win. Hearing him talk after the Moussassi fight was a bit concerning. Plus I am just not sure he is better than Rockhold anymore. So then what is he fighting for? I don’t see Jacre KOing him nor do I see him out striking him. So this is a good fight. I see him beating Whittaker or Bisping.

Oh dear! Weidman was just ‘back’ (after beating a chubby welterweight) and now it seems he will be going away again

    • deepgrim

I think he will beat Jacare.

      • ShawnKarr

He might. He’s got a 4 inch reach advantage and if he can keep the pressure up and use lots of kicks (I don’t think he does usually)…he might win a decision.
But Jacare has way more paths to victory! He won’t be worried about getting taken down and he has more power and better jitz.
It’s not looking too good for Weidman imo.

jacare has a bit of power but not many combinations and im not sure if he still has this power as he has been shrinking under usada. I think weidmans stand up is better overall but sometimes he seems to panic and go for takedowns, maybe he wont do this against jacare. Weidman has pretty good bjj too and his wrestling should dictate where the fight plays out.

Weidman ain’t no Whittaker. Weidman doesn’t use angles well, horrible head movement and is flat footed. These were the reasons Whittaker won. Weidman has also absorbed way more damage in his fights than Jacare. I think he absorbed more punishment in the Rockhold fight than Jacare in his entire career. I Agree with James C that Jacare (probably) can’t take him down… but I don’t think he needs to.

Weidman sure isnt as tidy on the feet as whitaker, but he did ultimately beat anderson and machida in the stand up, was beating romero and i think he was starting to edge rockhold in the stand up when he did the wheel kick for some strange reason.
The shots he has ate are definately a concern i have for weidman, but still remember that he didnt go out cold to either of these guys and they were massive strikes so i dont think jacare can put him out either.
Jacare will carry a threat early but usually runs out of idea’s on the feet which can happen to grapplers with a bit of striking.

Why would Jaycee be worried about being knocked down. Whitaker a smaller WW did. Weidman has KO power …. ask Munoz and Anderson

          • ShawnKarr

A punch to the face I’m guessing. Munoz and Anderson haven’t fought Jacare. Romero, Rockhold and Mousasi fought both.

      • JamesC

Agreed. I think his standup is better and nacre can’t take him down.
