Junior Dos Santos Isn’t Interested In Fighting Alistair Overeem Any More

Junior Dos Santos and Alistair Overeem were originally scheduled to face each other at UFC 160, the fight was scrapped after Overeem was declared injured. Junior faced Mark Hunt at UFC 160 and won by devastating knockout in the third round, and has lined himself up for another title shot.

The Heavyweight division is once again tied up, with JDS and Cain Velasquez holding the division hostage. Dos Santos spoke with Fightersonlymag.com about his feelings towards Overeem:

“Bigfoot put him on his place. I no longer feel the wish to face him but I fight whomever the UFC puts in front of me. I will train aiming that guy and to be very well prepared to win,”
“The limited fighters, guys who don’t believe in themselves, who don’t dedicate to the training and don’t take it seriously are the ones who make it to call for attention. They do it to hype themselves.”

With JDS vs Velasquez III in the works for UFC 166, it doesn’t seem like there is much chance of any other fighters getting hold of that title this year. If Dos Santos wins, then Velasquez will probably get a rematch. Overeem is scheduled to face Travis Browne at UFC on FS1: Boston, in a fight that he really needs to win.

His shocking knockout loss to Antonio Silva has put the K-1 champion on thin ice, which would soon become a slippery slope should he lose against Browne.

“It’s not that he [Overeem] is bad. He is an excellent fighter and he has great accomplishments in his career. You see [Chael] Sonnen making controversial statements as well but I’m not saying anything bad about him.”

“Have you see Sonnen? He is an excellent athlete… but he is better as a commentator.”

I think it’s about time for a shake up in the Heavyweight division, I would like to see Werdum thrown in to the mix. His win against Nogueira was a masterclass in grappling, and just goes to show that he is the premiere BJJ artist in MMA.

Any predictions for who will be the HW boss by this time next year?

  • He can talk all he wants… he WILL fight Overeem and Overeem WILL beat the crap out of him…. end of story!

    • I'm not sure about that, Overeem has never had a great chin but the same can't be said for JDS. I'm not even sure Overeem will get the chance to face him if he loses his next bout.

    • LMFAOOOOOO, are you serious?! Overeem will not beat the crap out of anybody. Travis Browne is going to beat Overeem. IF Overeem wins and JDS loses to cain and some how got matched up Junior would handle him easily. While Overeem has more of a well rounded striking game than Mark Hunt did I expect the fight to look similar. JDS' hand speed is PHENOMENAL, he'll K.O Overeem worse than Big foot did

      • We'll see about all that…. talk to y'all in a couple of months 😉

    • You gotta be kidding. Overeem is an overrated bum. JDS would KO him in the first. easily.

  • Overeem threw away all of his fundamentals in his last fight, completely underestimated his opponent, and paid the price for it. We know what Overeem is capable of, and for anyone to undermine someone in the UFC would be a bad decision, cause Overeem himself, ironically, proved that point.

  • Santos has to win, he's hanging out with "The most interesting man in the world"

  • Once Reem gets a win, the UFC will be all over him like a rash, reinventing him as a serious title contender.

    • One day, Rogans going to pop a blood vessel and spew.

  • Bigfoot was put in his place by Cain. Did that matter to the UFC? No, give him a rematch. Anyway, though Bigfoot put Overeem away, can't say I was impressed by either. Bigfoot's gameplan, survive for 1 or 2 rounds til he gets tired. That gameplan strikes me kind of odd.

Haven't been impressed by Reem since the Werdum fight. Was sloppy against Brock and Bigfoot deserved to win because of Reem's lack of heart/cardio/arrogance. Also lack of respect to his fans and the nation he grew up in.

  • Like really guys lets be serious – Overeem is the most interresting phenomenon in mma – He can knock out anyone in round 1 and loose to even the newest newcomer ! He imo is so valuable to the devision!(especially since Brock is gone) I wanna watch him fight whoever – but really hope he is gonna stay in title contention!

    • lol…you're for him…no, you're against him…no, you're being sarcastic…ok you lost me hahahah
