Josh Barnett vs. Travis Browne Booked For UFC 168

As if it wasn’t already a stacked enough card, UFC 168 has added a blockbuster Heavyweight matchup in the form of Josh Barnett vs. Travis Browne. The exciting tilt will join the anticipated rematch between Chris Weidman and Anderson Silva and the Ronda Rousey vs. Miesha Tate title fight to present one of the finest UFC cards ever put together on paper.

The Las Vegas Review Journal was on hand to break the news earlier today.

For Barnett, it’s a great way to keep the momentum of his recent UFC return running. He was last seen dismantling Frank Mir in the co-main event of UFC 164 with an absolutely vicious display of Muay Thai. “The Warmaster” is looking to fight some big names in the Octagon, and he just got one in Browne.

For the Hawaiian-born Browne, Barnett is the perfect opponent to prove he belongs with the divisional elite. After weathering an early storm against Alistair Overeem in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 26 from Boston, Browne came back to knock out “The Demolition Man” with a well-placed front kick. Browne looks like he’s ready to fight anyone, and Barnett will be a true test of his readiness.

This fight has all the makings of a war. I’d give the early edge on the feet to Browne, but Barnett’s standup is no doubt underrated. Obviously Barnett has a huge advantage on the ground in terms of submission, but Browne’s never tapped out. UFC 168 is shaping up to be one of the best year-ending spectacles ever produced by the UFC. Who is your early pick to win this pivotal Heavyweight match?

  • That's a fight that makes a lot of sense, right now. Good match.

  • I agree. Should be a great fight. If Browne can finish Barnett, he should, and most likely will, get a title shot.

    • I agree… but if Barnett finishes Browne, he should get JDS next… and to answer your question Mike, I think Barnett got this! I really like Browne, he's skilled, tough and has HEART as he showed in his last fight with The Reem but Barnett is an animal man. I see Barnett dragging his a-s-s down and submit him… Browne is very dynamic but a seasoned veteran like Barnett has seen it all before and i think he's got an answer for Browne and it wont be pretty.

      • I think I'd pick Barnett in this fight, too. Josh really impressed me with his win over Mir. He's a big, nasty, tough, aggressive fighter and he wants to get paid. He's also got that old school "war" mentality. I think Barnett beats everybody up to the three spot. I think Josh would have trouble with Werdum, JDS and Cain; as he's already lost to Cormier the point is already made on the question of his, beating Barnett.

That said, Cormier didn't do it by KO. He had to take a decision. So, maybe Josh might win the next one? Who knows?

        • Im rooting for an upset. I wouldn't be shocked if brown knock him out. This is worthy of a PPV. What a matchup!

          • I actually would be shocked if Browne knocks him out.. barnett has only been KO'd once and that was 12 years ago by Pedro Rizzo in his prime! Considering the endless list of monsters Barnett fought and slayed after that. It is very VERY unlikely that Browne (or anyone else for that matter) will knock him out.

          • I just think that it is the only way browne can win. submission? nah decision? I cant imagine it.

          • Neither can i…. that's why he will most likely loose!

          • Agree haha but i want brown to surprise everyone and shake the HW division

    • It's a super tough call. I think Barnett will win but Browne could shock as well. Great fight, super exciting and couldn't fit more on an already awesome UFC 168 card

  • Problem is if josh gets him down which I am sure he will. Its over for browne

  • Nice fight.

  • *This*…… Great f'ing fight.

  • Standing or on the ground Browne will be in trouble. The only question is The War Masters stamina? He can't keep the pace he kept against Mir for 3 rounds. But anyway I've got Barnett in this one, first round KO or third round submission. Sure Barnett would have trouble with Werdum, JDS and Cain, but they would also have big problems with him. I think a lot of people are underestimating Barnett.

  • Now THIS is a great fight!!

  • Can't wait for this one.
