Jose Aldo Wants Immediate Title Shot At 155 With A Win Over Anthony Pettis

UFC 163 will be a huge night for the Featherweight division, Jose Aldo will put his 145lb. title on the line against Anthony Pettis. But the fight may have more implications than just in the FW division, it seems that Jose Aldo is gunning for a title shot at Lightweight.

The 145lb. division hasn’t really had a rightful contender for a while now, and with Anthony Pettis dropping to challenge for the title, it doesn’t look like that’s going to change. Aldo was on hand to talk to MMAJunkie.com about his feelings on the situation:

“I don’t think it’s fair. I think if you’re going to drop down, then prove yourself by first having great fights within the weight class, and then you’ve earned the right to fight for the belt. That’s how I think. But since we’re already booked, no problem. I’ll just go and win that fight.”

Many fans, and Chan Sung Jung, feel like Aldo vs. Pettis is an awesome fight-but probably not that fair to the rest of the division. Factor in that Frankie Edgar gt an immediate title shot when he dropped, and you can start to sympathize with the rest of the division. Aldo then spoke about a shot at the 155lb. belt:

“If everyone is cutting in line, I might as well do the same thing,” Aldo said. “I’d like to move up one division and have an immediate title shot. We took the Pettis fight with this in mind.

“It’s [set]. Exactly. We put that in (the contract). It’s black and white. When we accepted the Pettis fight, we brought that up right away. Since everyone wants to cut into our line, let’s cut into theirs too.”

This adds a very interesting twist to the title bout at UFC 163. It was already lining up to be a great scrap between two of the best strikers in the game, and now the news that Aldo (and arguably Pettis) will be challenging for the Lightweight scrap should either win. It is probably a safe bet to say that the FW title is going to be tied up for a long time, and also that we will likely have a two-weight UFC champ by Christmas!
