Hector Lombard To Work With Mike Dolce, Considering Drop To Welterweight

Former Bellator Champion Hector Lombard has not made a fantastic start in the UFC. The Cuban knockout artist has racked up a 1-2 record in the company. Last seen in action losing a uNanimous decision to Yushin Okami at UFC On Fuel in March, Lombard is in a do or die situation right now.

His sole win in the UFC comes via a knockout of Rousimar ‘Paul Harris’ Palhares last December, and anything short of a win in his next fight will almost certainly spell disaster for Lombard. So what’s next for Lombard? Well, according to Ariel Helwani, Lombard is actually planning a drop to welterweight:

“I spoke to Lombard today and he’s about to work with Mike (Dolce) because he wants to get leaner,” Helwani said. “He walks around at 205 and he feels that at his height, it’s not really at his best interest to be fighting at 185. He knows the UFC wants him to go down.”

“First thing’s first, he needs to have nose surgery. He broke his nose fighting Yushin Okami so the surgery is coming up next for him — hopefully next week. After that, he’s going to focus on that cut down to 170.”

So with ‘Lightning’ eying a move to 170, what will this mean? Well, if Lombard can put a good run together, he may stand a chance at 170lbs. He is a fast power puncher at middleweight, if he can bring that power to the welterweight division he could really do some damage.

At 35 years old this could be Lombard’s last shot at the big time, if he can make the cut and knockout some good competition do you think he could challenge any of the top five at WW right now?
