Greg Jackson: An upset GSP would be a very dangerous individual

Heading into this weekend’s UFC 158 main event, many believe that the only way Nick Diaz can defeat Georges St-Pierre is to get inside his head. Diaz no doubt has tried up until this point, evident by his obscenity-laced tirade on last week’s conference call.

We saw GSP respond in a more animated way than we’ve seen, but it was still rather calm and reserved for trash talk. And it’s not going to end up getting to him according to St-Pierre’s coach Greg Jackson, who today told Sherdog Radio:

“I don’t think so just because Georges is so smart. I always say that, but I don’t know if people realize just how smart he really is. He understands the game extremely well.

Even if he gets mad, he’ll be able to control it and keep his business his business. He’s incredibly smart, like off-the-charts smart. I think he’s going to be much too smart to fall for that.”

It’s obviously true that GSP is an intelligent and calculating fighter. He has accused Nick Diaz of being just the opposite. What’s for certain is that they are definitely different fighters whose styles outside the cage contrast as much as their styles in it.

And while Diaz has certainly tried to get St-Pierre to lose his emotional calm, Jackson believes that this is exactly what he might not want to do:

“Up to the fight, I’m sure [St. Pierre] will be emotionally invested in it. I wouldn’t want to see Georges upset. I’ll put it that way. He’s a son of a gun even when he’s calm and rational. … I’ve worked with that guy for years, and if you got him really upset and he stays focused, that would be a very dangerous individual.”

It’s tough to think that GSP will lose his focus and do something stupid on Saturday night. But anything is possible in MMA. Has GSP progressed so far that his focus and mentality cannot be wavered?

Of course his shocking loss to Matt Serra has taught him a lot about safety in fighting. We just haven’t seen that killer instinct from GSP that his younger self possessed in a big way. Will it return in Montreal this weekend?

  • Certainly, GSP is the most focused guy I have ever seen in the UFC but he can lose it when it gets tough and needs his psyc doctor in his corner in those moments. Many are the same way though with the exception of a few. GSP is certainly able to come back after a hard round though with a new motivation. He is a great in many ways.

    • this will be the meanest decision in the history of decisions

      • would have given 2 "funnies" if that was possible

      • diaz will be taken down and be beaten by unanimous decision, i think this would be the result of this fight will just nothing but a hype.

  • Expect a 6th round TKO by Georges Safe-Pierre in that fight. Damn – I'm so pumped.

    • YEA! also Expect Arnold appear at the end of the fight and tell GSP, Get To Da Choppaaa!

      • Or Seagal will show up and tell everyone that he taught GSP how to land a takedown.

        • The only thing Seagal has ever taken down was a buffets yearly profits in one sitting.

    • @underdogstupidness: theres such no thing as a second round, i think ur pumped up bcus ur masturbating.

  • Even though I'm a fan of GSP,I don't think the boring criticism he's received in the past few years has been unwarranted. I honestly don't think we're going to see a drastic change in his fighting style. He is what he is at this point and he's still one of the best in the world. I think GSP in a 5 round split.

    • I agree with everything you've said except :-0 I think GSP will finish Diaz

      • That's right…FTW!! I said it cuz I've got balls…well, one anyway.

  • i hope GSP comes in and starts fighting with his emotions so he can leave openings for nick to exploit either on the ground or on the feet.

  • Don't piss off the French Canadian, or he will decision the crap out of you.

    • You laugh (and I laughed at your joke too BTW) but he decisioned the crap out of Koscheck and Koscheck got the **** beat out of him and was off for how long? Nine months?

  • Greg is right – Canadians are know for being such lose canons.

    • yes and we hate bad grammar!!! it's Loose btw@#$%@

    • The only time I have seen Canadians mad is during the hockey lock down and that time I cut in front of the line at a Tim Horton's by mistake… I apologized and they went back to being cool and chill as they alway are, oh, and that one time when we all were jerks to Bryan Fontes about his article he wrote about the media call, sorry Bryan I was having a bad day : )

  • "*Could be" We haven't seen GSP mad.

  • If Georges wants to quell the nay-sayers, then he has to stop Nick, not just garner the win. He has to KO, TKO or submit Diaz. It's that cut-and-dried. Personally, I think ND is tailor-made for a GSP stoppage, but given that those seem to be eluding Rush of late, his fans will, including myself, will take a wait-and-see attitude.

I don't care how he gets it. I just want him to get it.

  • Everyone is ragging on gsp for being boring but they keep forgetting that he is the WW champion and that's all that matters.

    • Hey, the Koscheck fight and the Condit fight were not boring. Those that thought they were don't know MMA

      • I have said it before and I will say it again better to win boring than lose spectacularly.

  • gm1

    All of you are wrong……
Ben Henderson is the person to show everyone the recipe how to beat the Diaz brothers…
brief exchanges…then move….takedowns with Ground and Pound…but still being careful on staying defensive from the subs.
More stand up, kicks, knees, superman punches….followed by more takedowns and more *** whipping. After it is all done it will be a unanimous decision and great performance by GSP.

  • I'm not impressed with that performance.

  • How come nobody give Ben Henderson a hard time hes the decision king as well. His last seven or so wins were via decision. The reason is everyone knows that LW is stacked…. well so is the WW.
    Haters gotta hate.

    • Cool

haha I agree ben Henderson is worse than gsp, and he actually wants to fight him that would be the most boring clinch fight in the history of decisions.

    • Ben is not the same fighter as GSP in that he goes for the finish and is not hesitant to throw the balls to the walls approach. He may get a decision but not in the same fashion.

  • haha I agree ben Henderson is worse than gsp, and he actually wants to fight him that would be the most boring clinch fight in the history of decisions.

  • Diaz will sub gsp in the 4th round.lets end SAFE P's run!!!

  • My engelisch is moch beter than yoors…..

  • u guys keep saying GSP is boring but then he got the biggest, if nt second bigges PPV. Haters gonna hate

    • It's because the Canadians stand behind their man and he is the only Canadian really in the spotlight, so when he fights they all watch. I know that some Canadians won't buy a PPV unless GSP is on it.
