Gina Carano Teases MMA Return, Says She’s Never Fought At Her Top Form

Former Strikeforce women’s featherweight champion Gina “Conviction” Carano has been in the news a lot lately, with most of it centered on her rumored return to MMA for a proposed title bout with undefeated UFC women’s bantamweight titleholder Ronda Rousey.

She’s also been out of the cage for well over four years, as her last bout was a vicious first round TKO loss to Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino, the Invicta FC featherweight champ who has also been linked to a bout with Rousey. Carano is still under contract with the UFC, who gained her legal fighting rights when they bought Strikeforce in 2011.

Now focusing mainly on acting, Carano appeared on last night’s edition of CBS’s “The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson” to discuss a potential return to fighting:

“It’s kind of being discussed right now. It’s something that I always loved to do and it’s such a genuine expression for me. I wouldn’t say that unless I was actually thinking about making a comeback possibly.

I think I just have these two different personalities. I think I might be a little bipolar. I just have this super aggressive side to me and I have this shy side to me. They’re going to meet in the middle one day. I can’t wait for that to happen. I’ve never gone into fight actually feeling at my top form. That’s something I really want to experience.”

Interesting. While it would no doubt be an enticing possibility to see a top-shape Carano face off with Rousey, there’s a lot of red tape that has to be bypassed in order for it to happen.

Although Rousey has stated she would grant Carano an immediate title shot, “Conviction” had issues making the featherweight limit of 145 pounds, making a cut down to bantamweight a very difficult proposition.

Two, there are some legitimate contenders in Cat Zingano and Alexis Davis who have truly earned their shot at the belt, and to see a woman who has never once fought in the Octagon get the shot would be more than a little insulting.

But this is the fight business, and if the huge fight can be made to happen, you can bet Dana White will do everything in his power to do just that. Bipolar or not, do you give Carano any inkling of a chance versus the dominant “Rowdy”?
