Georges St-Perre Calls For Stricter Drug Testing In MMA, Says The Sport Has A Problem

The words ‘Drug cheat’ are used far too often in assosciation with MMA, especially in recent times. Whether it is TRT or down right steroid abuse, everyone has an opinion on the subject. This includes current Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, who spoke recently with, to discuss stricter drug testing for MMA fighters:

“I believe the sport has a problem now,  When I first started fighting in mixed martial arts, it didn’t have any money,” St-Pierre explained. “So, now more money got involved, more ways are there to be cheating to take a shortcut”

“I believe VADA (voluntary anti doping agency) testing I’m up for it and I invite my opponent to do the VADA testing for the championship fight.”

The VADA basically acts as a platform to monitor fighters outside of the athletic comissions testing periods. This means that it would be damn near impossible to take steroids and fight in the UFC and pass not only the NSAC’s tests, but also the more frequent VADA tests. GSP certainly has a point.

“I invite if possible all the high-profile athletes in the UFC to do the same. I believe it’s a good thing. It’s a bit of a pain in the butt sometimes but I believe to make the sport (better) … I’m ready to do it to set a good example.”

There is nothing good about illegal drug use in MMA, and the sooner we rid the sport of it, the better. St-Pierre’s trainer, Farias Zahabi, had this to say on the matter:

“If Georges is champion and he’s clean, nobody has any excuses,”

GSP has frequently been accused of steroid use by his past opponents. The most recent being Nick Diaz, although I’m sure not many people actually believed him. St-Pierre is right about the magnitude of this problem, but with so many fighters recieving low pay cheques, will paying for more drug testing really appeal at the mid to lower level fighters?

Possibly the worst kind of cheat is someone who does it at the highest level. Winning a championship by cheating, in any form, is a disgrace to the athlete and the sport. In a sport like MMA where honor and respect are due to hard working champions, cheating just isn’t welcome.

  • GSP: 'Your Drug Uze Iz Dizzapointing'

    • Rory, I like how Dana White confessed that Bonnar had lied to him about being clean….Makes you wonder how the two of them arrived at that conversation ?

IMO, to even open that conversation would indicate that Dana knew that Bonnar was one of the many "juice" junkies floating around his organization that weans on and off steroids during the year.

  • For an athlete there is no point in participating in a non mandatory voluntary drug testing. Why subject yourself to additional testing and jabs of the needle if you don't have to.

There should be one drug testing organization that oversees everything. If the commission can't modernise then thats their problem.

Voluntary systems never work….Go back to the root of the problem and have a serious overhaul.

    • yea, almost all fights have at least 3 months notice, have them test on the 1st of each month. At the rate GSP fights, he can test on the 1st of all 12 months 8P

  • GSP can't even finish the drug test.

  • yes he did he just ayed on the needle until it was over

  • I like Georges seeing a problem but voluntary is not exactly what I had in mind. I think there should be random tests done within 3 month periods and you never know if you will get nearly 6 months with no test or a week and anything in between. I imagine most would just wait until they get their test for the 3 months and then go on but not if it could happen again in a week.

  • God, this sport really needs a drug testing overhaul. You have these guys fighting in Japan where drug use is encouraged and padding their records. And let's not even get started about some of these men masquerading as women. Cyborg looks a freaking ****** from hell. If you guys have never wrestled or did BJJ with a guy on juice, it's insane the advantage they have. I remember training with this guy who was "GF skinny" and six months later he put on 60 lbs of muscle… he on GH and roids, etc. I hope they can clean up this sport to protect the fighters who are playing fair. My two cents.

    • T R A N N Y? Is banned too? LOL

    • No , cant say I rolled with a guy on steroids.

  • Did Georges Safe-Pierre really say these things? I see the quotation marks, but were those really his exact words? if yes, well, bravo, Georges.

Well said. That said, I hope you don't pull a Rafael Palmeiro anytime soon on us, though.

  • GSP: Athletic Commission, I am not imprayzed by your drug tests

  • I cant blame Diaz for wondering about GSP, just sayin.
