Prior to his UFC 217 middleweight title fight against Michael Bisping, Georges St. Pierre, who hadn’t competed since UFC 167 in 2013, said that he was required to defend the title against interim champion Robert Whittaker if he was indeed victorious. Critics, however, were skeptical of that, and it looks like they were right.

St. Pierre ended up submitting Bisping in the third round, but was non-committal of his future at 185 pounds in the aftermath. He’s now dealing with a case of colitis, and recently said that he doesn’t think he’ll fight at middleweight if he ends up returning to competition:

“I’m not sure if I compete I will go back at 185, I don’t think so,” St-Pierre told TSN.ca. “I don’t think it’s a good thing to do, force myself to eat to gain muscle mass. It was very hard and it was not healthy.”

With that in mind, the UFC now has some decisions to make, as does St. Pierre.

  • Shock Wave

    Good move.
    If 170 works, do that.
Everyone in WW better watch themselves!

    • Shaun Grainger

oh but he signed a contract to fight Whittaker next he should have stayed retired. Dana will be done with him now.

      • Tim Cammack

Dana won’t be done with GSP.. He’s a huge draw and makes the company millions when he fights.

        • Shaun Grainger

Guess we will find out now… Dana likes money but his ego gets in the way…

      • Kris-tyahn

Yeah imagine if the UFC told fighters one thing and did another… BAHAHA! GSP is in the drivers seat, especially with Conor possibly done with the UFC! GSP is looking more and more like the golden goose!
He’s also not fighting at MW b/c of health reasons, it’ not b/c he doesn’t want to fight at MW, he’s too small. He’s barely avg. size at WW! He wanted a challenge, and he tried to fight a bigger, stronger guy after being off for 4 years and still submitted him, something Rockhold, Henderson or Silva couldn’t do.

        • Draven

Rockhold submitted Bisping previously and Hendo KOed Bisping out cold.

  • Tim Cammack

Hope he drops down to WW and dethrones Woodley.. I’d love to see him clean out the current WW division.

    • Shaun Grainger

won’t happen… Mark my words only fight GSP wants now is McGregor. this was the plan all along

      • Tim Cammack

Conor doesn’t fight.. He hasn’t fought MMA for almost 13 months… Conor likes money but doesn’t like losing so I can’t see him accepting a fight with GSP knowing he’s gonna get absolutely man handled and mauled into submission.
I’d much rather see Woodley vs. GSP

      • Kris-tyahn

He’ll propably fight for the WW title vs. Woodley, but he won’t defend it, unless it’s vs McGregor and we all know MGregor will not fight GSP at WW, not even a semi option. If GSP fights/beats T.W and wins the WW belt, he may fight McGregor for the LW… and then call it a career. But he may have 2-3 fights left, but he won’t be defending his belt like he did for 6-7 years! Those days of defending the belt on a regular basis are OVER!

      • Kris-tyahn

P.S McGregor would not fight GSP, why do you think he hasn’t called out or uttered those 3 letters…. b/c GSP would destroy McGregor at WW – the only chance Conor has vs GSP is to get him to drop to LW and drain himself so he gasses in 2 rounds! Every fighter has stated McGregor gets “wrestled fucked & TKO’d or submitted” by GSP!

        • Shaun Grainger

I meant at 55’s GSP said he could make that weight…

    • Draven

Can’t see how GSP beats Woodley. Tyron has very good takedown defence, good striking, bjj and speed. Sorry, Woodley wrecks GSP easily.

      • Tim Cammack

That’s what people have said about his last (umpteen) opponents… Never underestimate the GOAT!! GSP has better striking that TW, TW isn’t an amazing technical striker, he just has KO power and lousy technique.. Remember when Rory Mac handled TW and nullified his entire strategy? GSP would do pretty much the same thing.

        • Draven

Tyron has improved a lot since the Rory fight, has become more technical and patient in his fights. He destroyed Condit, Lawler and roughed up Thompson twice whereas Rory lost to all three guys. Not even Maia could take Woodley down.

Sorry but as good as GSP is, Woodley is simply better and has surpassed GSP in his absence from the division.

          • Tim Cammack

We can agree to disagree!! Cheers

      • Kris-tyahn

Rory destroyed Woodley… I’m sure GSP would do just fine vs. Woodley. Everyone expected GSP to get KTFO by Hendricks, Diaz, Condit and Bisping, yet he won all 4. GSP’s wrestling is the best in all of MMA, like Cormier said, GSP hunched over (as in NCAA) who knows, but his MMA wrestling (which we’re talking about), he’s 2nd to no one! and he has way better striking than Woodley!

        • Draven

Yes Rory beat Woodley but look st who Woodley has beat since – Kim, Condit, Lawler, Thompson (x2), Maia just to name a few. Three of those guys who he beat that Rory lost to. GSP wouldn’t stand a chance against the current top 5 welterweights, they’ve surpassed him in his absence.

      • Johnny Carcosa

Maybe I’m wrong, but I agree, I don’t see GSP beating Woodley in a million years. I would like to see that, don’t get me wrong.

  • JamesC

There is the opportunity for something real interesting. What if GSP went down to 155 to fight Khabib. He then fight Ferguson for the strap. Connor might be back by then.

  • Shane Rene

He’s bitching out of fighting Whitaker plain and simple. Like eating food to gain muscle mass? He was as big as Bisping in there, who is he kidding.

    • OneFootFriendly

But theres natural skeletal frame underneath all that muscle.
It might look good posing, but its not tuned for performance.

Thats why some people are small for their weight class.
Becasue its the prime weight for the frame of them.

GSP is not big for 170.

    • Kris-tyahn

Scared to fight Whitaker? He’s smaller than Bisping & I’m pretty sure Woodley is probably just as bad of a match up, if not worst b/c he has way better wrestling than Whitaker does and he probably has more power.
Here’s a tissue hater… and I called the WAAAAAMbulance for you as well!

  • OneFootFriendly

    Eet woos nhat heal thee.

    Lala poopoo no goood.

  • Kamps Tepes

    Fucking bitch….

    • Tim Cammack

Yeah, the GOAT is a bitch… Just because he does what’s smart and doesn’t choose to tarnish his legacy by pacifying the desires of bloodlust from people who don’t even give a shit about him, he’s a bitch right? GTFOH
      Hope this helps.

  • Bill Wolf

Robert Whittaker is the real world champion, with no “interim” about it. The sooner that is official, the better.

    • Kris-tyahn

Pretty sure he’s fighting Rockhold for the title!

  • ekevin420bc .

Yeah i think he beats TW gsp is better everywhere TW will be too nervous to explode and try to knockout which is how he would have too win he plays too safe and boring Gsp will pick him apart and tire him

    • Draven

GSP played it safe for years & humped his way to a decision win. If Hendricks messed up GSP’s face, then Woodley would KO GSP. He’s just too good everywhere and fans tend to look down on his bjj and wrestling for some reason.

      • RayFromDa Bay

He G.roundS.poonP.ounded his way 2 the top!

  • Phoelix

George is more than likely going to hang up his gloves; he redeemed his reputation, which was damaged by the questionable decision against Hendricks and the rather strange “departure” from UFC.

Now, GSP may retire with honor and his health intact….can’t ask for more than THAT.

    • OneFootFriendly

I might not go so far as to say that I have less respect for him now,
but he seems like more of an axxhole now.

Not all that impressed with beating Bisping.

      • Phoelix

GSP had a reputation to rehabilitate, after leaving under a cloud; well, he accomplished THAT, got a bunch of cash and an easy championship belt. If it had been anyone other than Bisping, GSP would not have come back.

Now GSP has the distinction of having held belts in two divisions, and can retire with honor.
