Gennady Golovkin returned to action last night (Saturday May 16th) against Willie Monroe Jr. on HBO. ‘GGG’ put his WBA Super, IBO & WBC interim middleweight titles on the line, against a surprisingly game Monroe Jr.
The fourth round was Jr.’s best, as he actually managed to outland Golovkin to win the frame. This mattered little as ‘Good Boy’ floored Monroe Jr. in the second with a powerful left hook, and continue to chip away at his opponent’s chin.
The sixthround saw Monroe on the canvas again, after eating a barrage of unanswered strikes from ‘GGG’. Golovkin went to the neutral corner, and the referee had seen enought. That’s 20 knockouts in a row for the scary Kazakh striker, as he looks to cement his name in the history books of boxing.
That’s 33-0 with 30 knockouts, a fantastic record. The fact remains that no one wants to fight Golovkin, and there really is a gap in talent between him and the rest of the division, An ageing Miguel Cotto wants nothing to do with ‘Good Boy’, it’s just not worth the risk fighting such a dangerous fighter for the big names of the ring.
The problem is for them, there’ll come a time when they are going to have to fight him, once he conquers a few more names on the list he’ll have the star power to make it big on PPV.
