Frank Mir: Daniel Cormier doesn’t really have much finishing ability

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir recently appeared on MMA Fight Corner to discuss his upcoming blockbuster bout with Strikeforce Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier. Cormier has been billed as the next big thing at heavyweight in the UFC, and the experience of Mir is a perfect test to welcome him to the Octagon.

But Mir thinks that Cormier lacks finishing ability, a surprising statement considering DC has finished most of his fights early on:

“I pretty much know the guy. He has extremely strong, efficient wrestling. I think he throws his hands pretty fast and without abandon. I don’t think he’s the most technical boxer in the world, I don’t think he even thinks he’s the most technical boxer in the world. He’s definitely not JDS, but who is?”

“On the ground though, it really showed me, let’s face it, if I had the same guy on the ground, the fight would have ended pretty quickly. He wasn’t able to put the guy away through a lack of finishing abilities, through a lack of finishing moves. So that’s one thing that actually surprised me.”

It’s no secret that Mir’s submission skills are legendary, as is the Olympic wrestling pedigree of Daniel Cormier. When these two styles clash at UFC on Fox 7 April 20th, the fight could go either way.

Mir was last seen losing via TKO to Junior dos Santos at UFC 146 last May. He stepped in as a replacement for Alistair Overeem and admitted he was preparing for a power wrestler in Cain Velasquez. That may have had a hand in his loss to JDS, as his focus shifted and he was left with little time to lose the weight necessary to be fast enough to contend with ‘Cigano’.

If one thing is for certain, though, it’s that Mir is a true finisher of fights, evident by his many highlight reel submissions throughout his career. He has a tough test ahead in Cormier, but that doesn’t seem to have him too worried right now:

“I thought he couldn’t finish Josh because of Josh’s abilities, but then I realized ‘No, he doesn’t really have much finishing ability’. He can catch you with a punch, let’s face it, every heavyweight over 200 pounds has that ability to finish a fight if he catches you.”

“But you got to have the ability to finish with the submission, you know definitive ground and pound where you actually finish somebody off against the cage and it’s menacing. Not just finally the referee’s like ‘Well, you know, I guess the guy’s had enough. You really can’t put him away let me help end this fight for you.’”

Quite a bold statement in claiming that the referees actually help Cormier finish his bouts. From the look of things, Cormier has been nothing but a wrecking ball throughout his entire MMA career. He looks to take the UFC by storm, and Mir may just be his new victim.

On the other hand, if Mir can somehow pull off the upset, he will find himself with a wealth of new momentum in a division short on true title contenders. What are your predictions for their April 20th showdown?

  • "Frank Mir: Daniel Cormier doesn't really have much finishing ability"…..

Wow…..I have Cormier freight-training Mir in the first round. Mir won't know what hit him.

    • Dont you love it when Mir talks, and if you read it all it kinda makes sense. Mir is the man though when it comes to finishing wiki his methods of submission each one is a different sub than the last

      • I wonder if he will wake up thinking that exact same thought.

    • Strong words coming from a guy who's chin is more suspect then O.J. Simpson.

  • I dunno I could see this fight going either way.
For sure Mir knows how to finish a fight with his bjj but he's also shown he can be knocked out with all of his loses coming that way…

  • Dan's wrestling will keep it standing, and boxing will finish Mir. Love Mir but dont think he can take that punch.

  • No. DC could not finishing Barnett because Barnett is a good fighter. DC is going to manhandle Mir. Mir has about the same chance as did Barnett, drag to the ground and go for submission.

  • I'm a big Frank Mir fan, but even I give him little chance in this bout. None-the-less, I'll still root for him come fight night.

    • Big fan aswell, I think being one of the very smartest fighters out there he knows what he's talking about. Would even go as far as saying that he has actually analyzed his opponent pretty thoroughly and is not just trying to hype the fight. Cormier is a beast but so is Mir, it will be an interesting fight.

  • I use to believe good bjj would trump a good wrestling game but after the gsp vs diaz fight im not so sure anymore. Mir has about zero chance in taking cormier down and IF cormier decides to take it there his far superior wrestling game will nullify mir's sick ground game. Franks only choice will be to stand with DC and that won't make for a good night for Mir. DC by KO.

  • Mir more than anybody has the one shut power to put anybody away, both on the fee but more specifically on the ground. So he will never truly be outclassed going into a fight. However, I see Cormier working him.

  • Man sometimes i just want these fighters to shut up… get in the octagon and fight! its gonna be so embarrassing now for Mir when DC puts him to sleep… cause that's exactly what's gonna happen! Barnett didnt get finished cause Barnett's has a TITANIUM Jaw! The only one that ever knocked barnett out was Pedro Rizzo and that's 12 YEARS AGO! Mir got KO'd 6 times…. and very recent… This will be Nr.7

    • @ The Experience

If fighters were to shut up and just fight, we, the fans, would have considerably less to chew on, ***** about or fight over.

On the other point, you're probably right, Mir probably will get KO'd, but then again….any given fighter on any given night and all that….

      • The problem is not really the "talk".. it's the "walk"… and this is one of those situations where u just know the "walk" is not gonna back up the "talk"… and it takes away so much credibility of a fighter. Cause next time he talks, people will be like… yeah yeah Mr. Snuggie.. "snore away…"

  • I see Mir taking this fight to the ground by playing possum, when Dan jumps in….viola armbar/triangle

  • Man, Mir used to be smart. I guess JDS scrambled his brain a little.
