Former Bellator bantamweight champion Zach Makovsky cut by company

In a somewhat surprising move, Bellator has severed ties with it’s first bantamweight champion.

Zach Makovsky, who became the organizations first 135 lbs champ after winning the season 3 tournament, announced via his Twitter account that he has been cut.

“Honestly shocked but thank you for the opportunity @BellatorMMA @BjornRebney” Makovsky said.

He may not be the only one shocked as the move comes only weeks before Bellator moves from MTV2 to its new home at Spike TV. But apparently the organization felt the need to let “Fun Size” go after suffering back to back losses. He dropped the title to Eduardo Dantas via second round arm triangle choke back in April and recently dropped a close split decision to Anthony Leone on December 7. Prior to that, Makovsky rode an eight fight winning streak which included victories over Nick Mamalis, Bryan Goldsby and Ed West that earned him the title. He won two non-title bouts against Chad Robichaux and Ryan Roberts before losing his first title defense to Dantas.

The 29-year-old will try his luck on the free agency market where organizations such as Taichi Palace and perhaps the UFC could show some interest.

  • So Bellator tries to mimic the Ufc , but at least the Ufc , which is the biggest organization , cuts it's fighters after 3 losses in a row and not 2 like Bellator
    Makes no sense

    • Gerald Harris disagrees with the whole "UFC cuts its fighters after 3 losses" thing.

  • Not too surprising, Bellator isnt the "big show" the UFC hasnt always waited until a 3rd loss either, some are cut After 2 losses. Depends on the situation I suppose.

    • Some have been cut after 1

  • Wasn't Todd duffee dropped after 1 loss or something

    • From what I understand Todd had an attitude problem that got on Dana's nerves.

I bet he popped a boner when Russow knocked Todd out.

      • How could u not get a boner watching that knock out lol

  • Seems kind of weird, almost certain there is something behind the scenes going on.

He is one of the better fighters from a relatively shallow division in Bellator, must be something else at play.

  • I agree with Keith about what he said with something going on behind the scenes., the guy is a pretty good fighter… He should really be at 125 though

    • Agree.

That's what I would have thought would happen if Bellator was trying to axe him from the BW division. Asked him to drop to 125, that is.

  • to the 1st post-some fighters don't even have to lose 3 in a row to get cut, does Antonio McKee ring a bell to ya? Dana is ruthless, lol! Merry Xmas Lowkick!!!!
