Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei Silva Official For May 31 UFC Fight Night Event In Sao Paulo, Brazil

After a short bout of uncertainty, the long-awaited (and possibly overhyped) grudge match between The Ultimate Fighter (TUF): Brazil 3 coaches Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen will reportedly go down as planned, scheduled for May 31 at a yet-to-be named UFC Fight Night Event from the Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

There was a recent holdup after it was revealed that Silva had not yet signed on to face his arch nemesis Sonnen. But at tonight’s UFC Fight Night 38 post-fight press conference from Ginasio Nelio Dias in Natal, Brazil, UFC executive Grace Tourinho revealed that the event would take place in Sao Paulo.

So the stage is set for the fighters’ trash-talk fueled bout at the culmination of TUF: Brazil 3, which currently airs on the UFC’s online subscription service Fight Pass. The opposing coaches’ teams have already gotten into a much-publicized scuffle on the set of the show.

Let’s hope that the actual fight can deliver on the massive amount of hype it’s garnered over the past year. Last seen defeating Brian Stann in one of the most exciting bouts of 2013 at UFC on Fuel TV 8, Silva has been out of action for that entire time frame. “The Axe Murderer” has been battling a series of nagging injuries and has even stated that he wants pay-per-view revenue as part of his contract to fight Sonnen.

Apparently that hurdle has been surpassed, as the fight is now official.

Sonnen should be the clear favorite in the bout despite having a tumultuous-at-best 2013 that saw “The American Gangster” go 1-2, dropping bouts to champion Jon Jones and former champ Rashad Evans while submitting “Shogun,” who lost to Dan Henderson at tonight’s UFC Fight Night 38.

But with so much bad blood and emotion fueling this bout, anything could happen.

The stage is set for one of MMA’s longest-lasting grudges to be settled in Brazil. Who is your pick to win the heated match?
